more security guarding our posts

I understand that there has to be access to our posts for new people to get information and to join so what i'm asking i understand may not be possible.
What we write in here is very personal and if one of our significant others (or anyone we know) for any reason dedicided they needed to go snooping in here they may find some uspetting things, especially if they read all of our vents.

Is there some way the ICN can be set up to where we have to enter a password to actually read the posts. Like not to get to the message boards (so new people can look around at the recent topics)but to actually get in to the actual messages?

I love that idea. It would be a pain in the fanny but I would feel a whole lot more comfortable knowing that no one in my house could slip in and see what I've been saying.....geez [img]rolleyes.gif[/img] even my grandson scares me somethings when he's on the computer and checking things out. I don't think my husband would because we have always had that trust with his privacy and mine and I am sure he would never cross that line but that sure doesn't stand true for the rest of my family members <img src="graemlins/banghead.gif" border="0" alt="[banghead]" />

That's a good idea too. But wouldn't you just have to log out (upper left corner)??? Then when you came back on the site you would automatically have to sign back in with user name and password.

I know sometimes my computer has logged me out or something cause when I come back on I have to sign in.

Jaime, you are right in that you can log out, but that doesn't keep anyone from reading your posts. And you don't have to log in to read the boards. You can read them even if you aren't registered. You just can't post unless you're registered and logged on.

One thing for all to remember, even if the boards were password protected your other family members can see where you have been. If you don't know how to "wipe out" for lack of a better word, all the history and temporary internet files each time you are on and I don't know what else, it can still be seen if they really want to see. It would be a lot tougher but could be done. I understand the motive and think in most cases it would take care of the problem you all are talking about. I like the fact that the boards are open and it brings us back to maybe just having the one topic area that is protected and then if you didn't want your family to know about it they don't have to know. If there are any real computer wiz's on here they would know more about what I was referring to but my husband definately can see all I do each day on the computer just by going deep into some stuff I have no knowledge of.

I'm computer illiterate, but I got a little upset when my husband started questioning me about different websites I had visited, so I started playing around trying to figure out how he knew what I had been doing on the computer. It's not like I am trying to hide anything from him, but when he says something like,"Oh, so have you been looking up airfares on the iternet?" it just eats me up to know that he's snooping around looking at what I've done. So, I found a way to see all the websites I've visited. I don't know if it is different for everyone, but I have AOL and this is how I was able to go on and delte the temporary internet files that I visit: Click on settings, go to preferences, click on Internet properties, click settings again and then view files. You can click on each one and then click on the X to delete it.
I'm so thankful that we all are able to vent and share so much. I'd hate for anyone to violate our privacy!

I don't understand all of it but I think there is more than one place you have to clean up too. I know I would have to wipe out history and the temporary internet files. I don't do this but I know from watching him this is what he does.

Jolene: You might try this: On your main screen, click on Start; Programs; System Tools; Disk Cleanup. A screen should then pop up asking you to select which drive-probably [C:]click OK. This may take a moment for your computer to do this part-be patient even if it doesn't show anything for a moment. Another screen will say: Temporary Internet Files. Click View Files. All the cookies and temp. files and caches that are put into your computer everytime you visit an Internet Site will pop up according to date visited. If you want to delete all of them, click on Edit on the tool bar and click on Select All. The websites will highlight. Then click on File and scroll down to Delete. You will have to say yes to Delete. It will wipe it all out but the only thing is each time you come back onto this ICN website, you may have to re-enter your username and password to be able to post anything. I understand the desire for privacy, but I don't see how a password would help in this situation. If anyone can register and obtain a password, they can still read the boards and see what you're posting. The hassle of registering might deter some people, but anyone that's really intent on seeing the posts still can.

Just a thought.

Jolene: Another place on your computer (if it is an IBM)to view visited internet sites can be checked by: Clicking on Start; go to Search; then For Files or Folders; put in the words History folder (this should be in drive [C:]. If you want to edit/delete the sites you've visited,then on the tool bar click Edit; Select All for everything or click on the ones you want to delete (highlight) the go to File and scroll down to Delete. Yes for OK.

Thanks for the info and hopefully it will help someone who really needs it. I can honestly say I really don't care from my standpoint. I just knew that having a password was not the whole solution. I wanted those not aware of the other ways to be aware. Hope it will help!

Possibly an area like the "Moderator Board" that only can be entered by a protected password or specified name. Jo Ellen
