  • Hydrodistention ?

Has anyone ever heard of a bladder rupturing during Hydrodistention?
My Dr did tell me that was one of the risks to this procedure. I am really starting to worry about it, I really want it done but has anyone every heard of this happening, and if it does then what???

I know I will be fine, but I think I am having pre-op jitters about this procedure.

Any positive feedback would be appreciated.

I think there is one person on the boards that had her bladder rupture during the hydro, maybe she will speak up about it. I had one about a week and a half ago and though I was in some pain when I woke up all went fine and I didn't have any problems other than discomfort and being really tired for a few days afterwards. I actually go in this Wednesday to find out the results of my biopsy since the hydro showed a normal bladder. Hope all goes well with yours as well. Good luck

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

I thought you would chime in Ronda, but I didn't want to say your name in case you didn't want to talk about it. You're the only person on here I think that this has happened to. I don't think my doctor mentioned it as a risk but I really trusted him and didn't have any problems, other than the fact that my bladder looks "normal" haha

I have heard of two people this happened to, but as others have said it's very rare. Every time I have a hydro, I am told that this is a possibility, but I've safely had forty hydros now.

I'm told everytime that I go in that this is a possibility. But this is a rarity. I've only had 8 of these, and I have come out fine.

Hello - i had my hydro 3 weeks ago and it dosent cause any rupturing of the bladder so dont worry!

                Marie,

It took you 2 weeks to recover from this? I only took the day of the procedure and the next off from work? Do you think I will be able to go back to work? I do alot of lifting and standing. I am a rural mail carrier. I only work 5 hours a day, so I do have a short day.

                any info would be appreciated.

                  hydro

                  Hi Zanne

just to be sure - when i was referring to the hydro - in the uk its called a 'cystophy'. its the investigation with the camera in the bladder, the hydro water pump and the bladder biopsy so i just want to make sure we are talking about the same thing. i had this to determine whether i had ic and it came out a yes. so it that what u are having or it this the treatment u are need to have to treat ic? im confused?
i havent had my treatment yet - i have to wait a few weeks first for the biopsys to heal.
                  speak soon

You're a mail carrier? i know my doctors instructions told me not to lift anything for a few days and nothing up to 10 lbs (so maybe 2-4 days?) So you might want to take off a few more days, I don't know? depends, do you drive, or do you get out and walk your route? I've seen both.
I'm a Administrative Assistant - I usually schedule mine on Thursdays and take off on Fridays as well and I'm doing ok by the time Mondays roll around to go back to work. If I'm not I have the type of job that I can just sit and do computer work all day until I'm doing better. Like I said in a previous post, they (the hydro's) usually help me for about 6 months before I have to schdedule another one. The last one I had was about a month ago. Had no problems with it. But everyone is different. Good luck. You might want to ask your doctor regarding time off regarding your job and see what he/she says.

                        Hi Mary

think I have confused myself and everyone else!

Is the Hydro the treatment you have for ic? the weekly medicine inserted in the bladder?

i have had the cytoscopy investigation and been diagnosed with ic 3 weeks ago - but is this the same as the hydro? im new to ic and very confused????

                        thanks, marie

Bladder rupture? That sounds horrible. Does it heal after that? I haven't had that test, nor told that I need it yet. I go in for a Pressure Flow Study tomorrow (Urodynamics?) then an office cysto next week. These tests are freaking me out already. Good Luck with the cysto/hydro. I hope it helps you.

The procedure when you go to your doctor's office and they put medicine into your bladder is called an instillation. When I was working, I would go to my uro's office and have the instillation and go directly back to work.

A Hydrodistention is when you go to the hospital and have an anesthetic; they then stretch the bladder.

The Patient Handbook will explain a little more clearly.
