I'm a 38 yr female that just had a total adominal hysterectomy on March 5. Started having terrible pressure when urinating & pelvic pain at 5 wks post op. I called My gyno & he called in something for a UTI with no success...pain is worse now 9 wks post op. Went in to see gyno yesterday and he checked my urine & found nothing. He did a pelvic & said he was afraid it was IC. He is sending me to a Urologist. I've only had 1 Uti in my entire life so now I'm wondering if the hyster could have damaged or caused IC? I'm really scared. Everybody said I'd feel better than ever after the hyster but I'm still waiting. Somebody please help !!! Gina H...Georgia

It could be IC but I'm not a dr. There are many theories as to what causes IC and one of them is trauma like from an abdominal surgery. I hope that it's not IC but if it is we're all here for you.Christine
I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.
I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

I'm one who developed IC right after a hysterectomy. I had a combination of adhesions and IC --- it was a pretty horrible time for me. Once I had the adhesions taken care of and I had a hydrodistention things began to look at little brighter.

Gina,
I am a firm believer that sugeries can cause IC to come alive.. I think that it lays there just waiting for someone to come along and aggrivate it.. My IC started right after I had kidney stone sugery..So I do believe there is a connection.. I know there is some out there who have not had a sugery but has IC so I believe another stress on the body has caused that..I also know that depression and anxiety do not help IC at all..Well good luck finding out please let us know...Hugs

I had my IC before I had my hysterectomy; however I was in remission. ( I was in remission for 5 years). After I had my surgery though, my remission was history. Never really been in remission since-sure I have good days where I have either no pain or very little - but its manageable. If you have this, sorry, but we're here to help you out.Comment
