  • Pain after Cystoscopy

Can anyone please tell me how long does the burning last after a Cystoscopy? I had several Cystoscopies about five years again which I don't remember them being that bad afterwards. This time I had one on Oct 18, ended up with an infection a few days later. Now I had one last Wednesday and I am burning still pretty bad. Last time I had blood in my urine that is when I knew it was bad. This time I don't have blood yet, but the burning can be pretty intense at time. The reason I had the Cystoscopy is because of pain in my urethra to begin with so I am having a hard time deciding if this is just a reaction to the procedure or if I have another infection. I do not go back to the doctors for two weeks. Any suggestions?

It sounds like it could be infection --- I think you should be checked ASAP --- is there an urgent care center in your area?

      Cysto pain

I was talked into a Cysto a few weeks ago. It was a very painful procedure and I wish I was given the option to be put under for it. For 3 days the pain during urination was at its worst. I had to take time off work and from life. I would bite down on a towel and grip the counter during urination. Tears ran down my face. I would start crying when I knew I had to pee. It got a little easier each day and back to my "normal pain level" after about a week. I gave birth to two children and would rather do it all over again than have another Cystoscopy.

        Hi Katymom
Sorry you had such a poor experience with the cysto. Sure seems like for some people that procedure is pretty traumatic. My experience with the cysto/hydro under ansesthesia was very bad, too. I awoke to killer pain and complications and took a long time to heal but thankfully after some months got back to my pre hydro level of symptoms. I was extremely traumatized and am still to this day a little leary of doctors because of what I went thru. I'm so glad you are feeling better!
I see you're pretty new to the board. Welcome

Thank you Briza for your kind welcome. Yes, I am new to the website but I love all the information that I am getting. I am not doing to bad right now. I have a doctors appointment this Wednesday. I think that I might have another Cystoscopy under Anesthesia. I am going to see what the doctor says. I really want him to take a good look at the urethra while I am under. A couple of weeks ago he looked at it during an office Cystoscopy right after they had filled my bladder for a urodynamic test. I was in so much pain because of the bladder being filled that I even had tears running down my checks. I really don't think he could get a real good look at the urethra while I was begging to get up. Sorry, I can make a joke of it right now, but I thought it was the worst cystoscopy that I have ever had done. I really thought it was cruel to fill someones bladder beyond the point torture and then say just a minute we are going to stick a camera in their to take a look at your bladder. Anyway he suggested surgery right then, but I told him no. But know I am thinking that I will try it one more time. Sorry again, I just needed to vent. Thanks for asking though.

Oh my goodness he distended your bladder while you were AWAKE???? that is almost never done, and when it is we always here about it here. I wonder why the heck he did that?!

Otherwise, how do you feel about this doctor?

No, I didn't have the distention a few weeks ago. I had one of those back on Oct. 18 with a doctor from the university hospital in my state. I had stopped going to them because it was such a drive to get there. So know I am going to this other doctor. The urodynamic test was you come in after drinking 32 ounces of water then you sit on this special seat and empty. The machine reads how fast the flow is and how much you can empty. Then they lay you down in insert a cathetar (sorry on the spelling). They then fill your bladder until you can't stand it any more. I told them at about 200 Ml, but I was informed that they needed to put 300 in. So you can imagine what I was like by that point. Then they asked me to push and cough and do some other things. Then while the bladder is still filled the doctor came in to do a cystoscopy. Of coarse the Cystoscopy was not ready at that point so I had to wait until he got it ready. It just was not a pleasant experience. I have had other in-office cystoscopies done, I have never had one done while the bladder was filled.

When I have had cystos in my uro's office, they do fill my bladder with water so they can see the bladder lining. They also measure capacity at the same time.

Just had my first hydrodistention this morning at eight. I have been in exrutiating pain. And the doctor only perscribe a few pain pills. I have bleeding and seems to be tissue like substance in my urine. And i have only been able to urinate one time since being homeand it was terrible straining. And now i cant go at all. Any suggestion? Please
PS i will never have this procedure done again. I would rather give them an arm then to ever suffer in this manner again.

If you still are not able to urinate, please give your doctor a call. You may need to be catheterized. Please don't strain --- just straining can result in not being able to urinate. Have you tried sitting in a warm bath? It's okay to urinate in the tub. Straining can also cause severe pain.

Donna, the bath tub advice you gave me did work so thank you. Am only urinating maybe every eight hours and is still hard to get it going and isnt a very strong flow. I guess this could be normal after having the procedure. As long as i am able to urinate is there any reason to call the doc? I am still in a decent amount of pain. By the way thank you for all the helpful advice. It isnice to know i am not the only person suffering from this disease. As i thought i was since i was a child. After numerous trips to so many specialist all over the U.S. with no answers and being told it was all in my head...it was the best thing in the world to be told it wasnt in my head. I cried i was so happy to find out the problem.
