Hydrodistention, does it really help? Is it worth it?

    Hydrodistention, does it really help? Is it worth it?

    I'm scheduled for Hydrodistention on Thursday. Though I'm not sure I'm keeping the appointment. I've been trying to reach the financial office all week this week and last to get an estimate and no one is getting back to me. I fear if its too expensive I may have to put it off a few months.

    Needless to say, is it worth it? Does it really help?

    If I go in Thursday will I be back on my feet again by Saturday?

    I'll admit I really don't understand the procedure. The doctor said it might help, it might not help. The nurse got real snippy with me when I tried to ask questions and she said. If I don't have it done I'll continue to be in pain. She said its the only way for me not to be in pain, which I find really hard to believe. If that was the only fix why do they have me on medicine too? I don't know.

    I have read that hydrodistention helps in about 50% of patients. Even though I am one who is helped, I have to say that I don't agree with that nurse. If you've tried lots of other treatment options and they haven't worked, it sound like a reasonable thing to do; you could be one of the lucky ones.

    Just remember that it's YOUR body and your decision to make. Given your doubts/concerns, I do suggest a second opinion --- you can always reschedule for a later date.

      Basically they diagnosed me 2 weeks ago and scheduled me for the hydro. No other treatments have been tried. Though I do think the doctor has some ownership over the surgery center so that could be why they are pushing this.

      Also I think I asked above. If I go in Thursday, its an outpatient procedure, will I be good to go by Saturday. I'm involved in an event on Saturday that I really don't want to miss. I was under the impression that it wasn't a big deal and I'd be fine the next day. I have a feeling that might not be the case. Ofcourse I'm still trying to figure out what this darn procedure is exactly.

        Part of me wants to try it because my daughters birthday party is next week and I want to feel better, but now I don't want to try it at all at risk of not being able to to this thing I've been looking forward to for months Saturday and possibly feeling crappy for my daughters birthday party and our trip we are taking the following week from that.

        Is it true that this procedure can cause worse problems then the problem at hand? Will it hurt anything if I elect not to have it done?

        The doctor and nurse made it seem like this was the only way to feel better, that this and the medicine I am on was the only option. and the medicine I might add makes me feel worse than just the IC alone ever did.

          Okay I just called the doctors office and asked them about recovery time on this and they said. A day. I told them I was working an event Saturday and they said "you'll be fine to work". Obviously they aren't being completely honest or they don't know.

          I have a toddler I can't be down more than a day. She is into everything. No rest of the weary. Definately time for second opinion.

            If you have the procedure done at a surgery center, it costs a lot less. I have had my last two hydros at the surgery center and didn't have to pay any deductibles --- my insurance paid the entire bill.

            That said, if you have the procedure done on a Thursday, Saturday is a little soon to be planning a lot of activity. If you're doing well enough to postpone, that would be my suggestion --- two or three weeks shouldn't make any difference other than you would have to wait that long before any possible benefit.

            I had my last hydro in October 2009 and symptoms are just beginning to return 15 months later --- I usually go about a year between procedures.

            It shouldn't do any harm to not have it done. If your doctor isn't willing to work with you to treat your IC in any other way and your choice is to avoid the procedure, then I think a second opinion is a good alternative for you. I know it's a tough decision for you to make.

              Hydros have helped me. I usually can go 6-8 months between. I usually have them on Thursday and yes, at least for me I am back on my feet by Saturday. I usually take it easy for these 4 days though. I work full time and most times by Mondays I can go back to work, but I do take it easy. ( looking at your post though I would postpone it due to whatever activity you are going to (I think you said daughters birthday?)

              As to the financial part I have to pay a co-payment and then 20% of my deductable. I don't know where you live, but here sometimes they let you make arrangements.

                When it comes to HYDROS much depends on the Doctor. How often has he done this procedure? It is your right to ask. It did help me from getting up every 15 minutes to urinate down to once a night and sometimes I can sleep all night. That nurse can not speak for you. We are all so different. It will help some and not others. I am lucky in as much as I have grown children so was able to concentrate on myself and baby myself until I felt better. I was able to go over a year before having another. I think Donna is right. Since you have commitments for the following week-end. You may want to wait until you have more time to feel better.
