thanks for all the info everyone! Well, I'm not at that point yet. This has been a very frustrating process for me. I don't understand what it is with my period that causes me to have such trouble peeing. This literally happened overnight 6 mths ago and now every singe period I cry on the toilet trying to get the pee out. It's like my entire belly swells and everything goes crazy. Odd though, seems if I can pass a stool then i can pee easier. I'm sending hubby to get some colace for my next period and I'll take that and see if that helps at all. I tried the vaginal valium rectally last night because I was having this awful dull ache in that area...not sure if it reallly helped or not. I don't think so. I wish I knew what an actual IC flare felt like. If I ice my lower back I feel better....If I sit in the bath I feel better.....sometimes my bladder feels like it weighs 20 lbs. No urgency or frequency though. No burning. So confused....

A cystoscopy is a quick look into the bladder without stretching it --- it doesn't usually require anesthesia other than a surface analgesic. I have had several without being asleep. It's no worse than a catheter.

to endogirl2 ask for a small cath and just take a deep breath and try to relax if the nurse is use to doing caths all the time she will be gentle. You will be just fine i too was scared the first time, i barely felt anything. No pain whats so ever just try to relax and trust in your doc. Let us know how things go for you, I wish you the best.

You can always ask ahead of time for mild sedation. I had asked for Versed which is what they give you when you have a colonoscopy and endoscopy and I don't remember anything about the procedure at all. I remember the beginning and the end but nothing during. It wears off very quickly so you aren't drugged up later on. I had some pretty bad burning right after but they gave me pyridium right away, and in 20 minutes I was ok.

I've never had a cath or anything else put up my urethra - I'm pertified! Can you ask for alot of meds so you are out of it and don't even realize what's going on? It's also not that I"m not confident with what I"m being told, just afraid of this test and not sure if I "really" need it if my symptoms are only around my period. He wants me to see a uro/gyne next if the pelvic physical therapy doesn't work.

Everyone is different I get cathed quite often and it don't hurt at all.
Maybe it depends on the size of the cath and the nurse who doe's it.
They use a small one on me i have no problems so far.

I can't decide for you whether you need this test or not, but I have had several cystos in my doctor's office and they are not fun, but not horrible. If you've ever had a catheter inserted, that's pretty much what it feels like. I find that if I relax, it goes much easier. If you're not feeling confident about what you are being told, I suggest you see a different doctor for a second opinion.

    Warm hugs,
    Donna

    started a topic Cystoscopy

    Cystoscopy

My pelvic pain dr. said because I'm having this problem passing urine when I have my period it might be a good idea to have a cystoscopy done. Can everyone please post what to expect, if I should ask for any chill pills, how to handle the burning feeling I'm sure I will have after when I pee for the first time. I'm still not sure if it's necessary for me to have this test. I do not have any urgency/frequency issues. I pee maybe 7x total per day and don't get up in the night. I'm not sure what benefit this test would have - sure doesn't seem on the surface based on my symptoms that it's IC.
