I decided not to do the hydro or potassium test because I had a horrible reaction to another similar procedure when they thought I have was having kidney stones. My doctor said that these tests can often have negative results. I think she said somewhere around 40% of people with IC show nothing but still qualify for the diagnosis of IC.

I also had just a cystoscope, bladder filled with water but no pain until a few hours later...the pain was so severe I had to get an emergency appointment and was given my first instill which took away the pain. My Uro doesn't want to do a hydro at this point because of the pain I went thru with just the normal cysto.

A hydro is when they distend the bladder so they can get a better look at the walls of the bladder. It's usually done with some type of anesthetic. I had mine done in office with sedation and others have theirs done in an out patient setting with anesthesia. I was actually only scheduled for an in office cysto but since the sedation I requested worked so well on me they also did the hydro distention.

Yes I was diagnosed with IC and my Cystoscopy came back Normal

My Urologist wanted to do the Scope just to check for any signs of Ulcers or Sores/Redness but before we begin Procedure she did advise, " I don't want you to be discourage if we don't find anything because many People with IC don't have any signs showing up on their Bladder so it dosn't mean anything if we don't find anything. Most Patients with IC have normal Bladders, but we will just check anyways. Some IC Patients with severe IC show nothing and some show Ulcers. I did ask if the Ulcers came over time, like after years and years??? She said she couldn't say because every Body is different.
I guess that's why they don't dismiss your Diagnosis if nothing shows up.
I was told it's a diognosis of Exclusion, meaning if you don't show the IC ulcers in the scope and all other Test come back Normal they will most likely assume all your Symptoms are related to IC.
I had a Pelvic Exam, Blood & Urine Lab Work, Ultra Sound, and Cystoscopy and all cam back Normal. Yet I was diognosed with IC.

I hope this helps anyone out there,,,

Thank you for the thought. I drove myself crazy at the beginning trying to get current info on this cystica thing. It wasn't easy, as there is not a whole lot of info out there on this. Hope your appt. with the specialist goes well and eases your mind. I've been through three uros and finally found one who will take at least 45 minutes at a time with me and gave me such reassurance that she will work with me on an individualized treatment that I think that alone made me sleep better.

The type of cystica I have is not the glandularis. Apparently there are two types of cystica. I was concerned about this also and found there are different opinions of this condition. The uros I have seen believe it is a normal finding, and one report showed that 60 percent of bladders at time of autopsy show a cystitis cystica with no symptoms of bladder problems or disease. My one uro said she has seen hundreds of cystos with this cystica and unless it is causing an obstruction to the urethra it causes no problems. Older research saw it as a deviant in the bladder, but newer research feels it is a normal finding.

    You?

Cystitis cystica treated with the neodymium-YAG laser. Case report.

Department of Surgery and Urology, Trondheim University Hospital, Norway.
    Abstract

We report on two patients with severe urgency and pollakisuria where further investigations revealed cystitis cystica (glandularis). Conservative treatment and TUR of the lesions had no effect on the symptoms. After treatment with Neodymium-YAG laser, however, both have been asymptomatic for more than 18 months and urethrocystoscopic examination demonstrated normalization of the bladder mucosa.

    Wow.

And they said that cysts don't cause irritation?

My cysto with hydro showed cystica (a small cyst in trigone area) which two uros said were normal findings and does not cause irritation. Otherwise my bladder was visually normal. No pin point bleeding, no ulcerations, no stones, no cancer growths. So I was diagnosed on symptoms alone with a normal looking bladder. It still amazes me how a bladder can look normal but yet feel so abnormal..

Has anyone ever had a normal Hydro?

Does this ever happen that you get a hydro performed and the bladder looks all right, but you still get diagnosed?
