  • Cysto/Hydro/Fulguration/IVP/Urerthra & Ureter Dilation

Hello! On Thursday 5/27 I am having lots of procedures, and I am hoping someone has experience and advice for me! I am having a cystoscopy with hydrodistension and possible fulguration (burning off hunner's ulcers) along with possible urethral dilation since we have trouble inserting catheters. I also show a hydroureter on ultrasound, so while I am under anesthesia, I will also have a IVP (intra-venous pyleogram - Xrays) and then a possible ureter procedure to clear a blockage, insert a stent, or remove a stone or whatever they find.

I have pretty severe IC - with lots of pain on a regular basis. I also have severe retention issues. I know that these procedures can and hopefully will help the pain and retention. I'm also really, really nervous that I'll be in such tremendous pain afterwards. The last two times I've had general anesthesia I've been unable to urinate for days - so I have needed a catheter with a bag for about a week.

Any suggestions or experiences with these procedures to share? Although I've had IC for 7 years now, I've never had a cysto/hydro. Any guess at how long I will need off work, and then how long it will be until I recover? Thanks!

It sounds like you are having quite a bit done, I would allow at least a week to recover and then that will depend on how much they actually do.

They should give you pain control for this, I would hope they would rx you some before you go home.

The IVP is X-rays - shouldn't cause any pain. They hydro with fulgeration and possible dilation may cause some pain for a few days. I suggest you plan for a week of taking it easy. I had my last hydro one week ago today and I have only mild discomfort this morning --- not nearly as bad as before the hydro.

It's normal to feel some anxiety before a surgical procedure. After more than forty hydros, I'm still nervous every time.

      Warm healing thoughts,
      Donna

Just wanted to provide an update - I feel way better after the procedures than I was expecting. I did have a urethra dilation, distension, and burning off multiple hunner's ulcers. I did not need a stent in my ureter - thank goodness!

After the procedure I had some burning with urination - definitely not the worst I've ever had with this disease, so it was tolerable. I have some more general achiness and fatigue, but overall, I feel pretty darn good. If I have lasting relief, I would not hesitate to go through this again.
