There difinatly will be a female in the room, call ahead explain your situation and see if you can be rxed something to calm you do for the procedure.

In Canada the cysto/hydro is often done with out anastetic, they will ask you continusly if you are uncomfortable etc and will stop filling your bladder before it is too painful.

In my opinion this doesn't really help as they can't streach the bladder as they would if you were put out. Lots of uros like to try this first. In my case it didn't strech my bladder enough to see IC or give me any relief from IC due to the distention.

It seems to a process some Dr. make us go through.

    Good Luck MG

Skatersmom-I totally sympathize with your being uncomfortable with this exam due to your prior horrible experience. For legal reasons (to protect themselves), no uro will perform any sort of pelvic exam without a female in the room, so you will not be alone with this man.

As for the procedure itself, I had it with no sedatives and it was fine. I assume you are not talking about the hydrodistension-that can only be done under general anesthesia.

Please don't let your fear of the exam put you off. Find a female Uro.

Best wishes, Fluffersmom (lots of moms on this site)

    Hello Skatermom

I totally understand how you feel about getting this done because of your past sexual abuse/assault/rape experience. First of all, I am sorry you had to go through that, and I am also sorry that you may have IC.

I too was petrified for my first exam because of the same reason as you. I know where you are coming from. Before having this procedure done - tell the urologist about your past experience so that he understands that. He may choose to do the procedure a different way. I'm pretty sure a NURSE will be present ( I live in Canada too). And... you can always have a friend in the room with you - just get your friend to look at your face the whole time and talk about all sorts of fun things you have done. It will help you a lot. I have had a friend come in with me - which I thought would be embarassing, however, her and I talked about everything under the sun... all kinds of funny past stories. These are just suggestions - however, I would definitely encourage you to get the cysto so that you can discover the best treatment options for you.

    Praying for you,
    Wizbe

I think the most beneficial thing is ruling out other possible problems. One thing you might want to do is to ask for something to help you relax for the procedure.

There will be a nurse but there is no sedation..
I cant handle the thoughts of it. Ive made sure to this point any exams done have been females...just being in that position and pain being caused by a man will set fiance and i back months...

i think im just going to cancel and suffer on..theres no real tx for ic he told me anyway so is it worth putting myself through?

I had a pelvic exam when I had my first cysto. It was part of the ruling out process. In the United States, there is always a nurse in the room --- I assume it is the same in Canada. If you are sedated you should be relaxed so it won't be too bad.

The urologist booked me for a cysto exam in 2 weeks. He is just using a local. He said theyd fill my bladder and look around he also said hed do a pelvic exam at that time...

All ive read talks about sedation and no one mentions pelvic exams??

He also reminds me of the guy who raped me..Ever since then that position terrifies me. I assume it would be under a general..I dont know if i can go through with it. My fiance is 8 hours away and its not possible bc its a wed for him to come..
