  • IVP tomorrow

    UGH
I have put this test off since January because the prep is alway so hard on me and I spend weeks with colon spasms but I had a brave moment yesterday and called to make my appt....much to my horror they had an opening tomorrow at 10am.
I know that this test is absoluately necessary and I HAVE to have it done, but that doesn't mean that I have to be thrilled about it. Hopefully it will help with some of the symptoms that I am having and we will beable to see what is IC/bladder/kidney related or fibro related (praying for the later)

      Teri,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have to have an IVP. For me it was pure misery, I was still "going" because of the prep 24 hours later. Not being able to drink after midnight was pure torture - the worse is that my kidney doesn't act up unless I drink lots of water

I hope it goes well Hugs,

      Liisa

I've had an IVP done several times, but never had problems with it. What type of prep did you have to do?

YIKES!!! I can barely get that magnisiam stuff down!!! I'm not sure why but I have had many, many IVPs done without the prep. I don't know why sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Also, how will this show info about fibry/bladder info? Sometimes I think docs put us through tests that don't help. I have had many IVPs done but all of mine happen due to the kidney stones I have. My uro normally does an IVP when I have a stone because it usually pushes them on through.

I HAVE HAD MANY, MANY IVP'S AND THE ONLY PREP I HAVE HAD IS FOR MY ALLERGIC REACTION TO THE DYE, I CANNOT HAVE SEAFOOD ETC..DUE TO THE IODINE. I HAVE BEEN GIVEN BENADRYL AND ANOTHER SUBSTANCE, I HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING EXCEPT A LAXATIVE THE NIGHT BEFORE.
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL KIDNEY STONES AND TWO SURGERIES TO REMOVE PAORTIONS OF A BLOCKED RIGHT KIDNEY..ANY IDEA WHY THEY ARE SO MISERABLE? GOOD LUCK!!!!

Same here I've had 5 or 6 IVP's only 1 did I have to do the prep stuff and it was the most recent one before my cysto/hydro to rule out other things. It was ordered by my uro but all of the other ones ordered by other docs did not include the prep, this one tood me by suprise!! I would definately like to know what the difference is??? I will certainly ask and let yall know.

Prayer and better days for all!!

I was told that they don't get a good picture without the prep. I really hated doing it because I also have bowel disease. The doc's do all of these tests so they don't miss something. They don't want to be sued.

The prep can depend entirely on what they are looking for. I have had IVPs and my only prep was milk of magnesia the day and night before and clear liquids after dinner the night before. I never had to drink any prep stuff for IVP, but did for GI series --- I just held my nose and glugged it down. URGH!

Oh, yes, if you're allergic to iodine, they can still do the test --- just be sure your doc and the physician doing the test both know of your allergy.

                  Hugs,
                  Donna

I would say it is harder from the fibromyalgia--- it can make everything a little bit more painful.
