    colonoscopy

Hi, I'm new here, but after reading all this about the colonoscopy I feel the need to share with you all... I had a prolapse colon all my life, genetic defect, that I had surgery for around my 21st birthday. Part of my diagnosis was a colonoscopy. The prep was the worst part- you really do just become a hollow tube of a person! I felt so haggard and pale that next morning! But I took several Adovan to calm me down and the procedure was of course a little uncomfortable, but not too bad at all. It's interesting to see your insides all pink and so clean on the TV screen.

The worst part for me was when the Doctor first asked why I was a Women's Studies Minor in school- that very question was a red flag! And next, he tried to set me up on a date with his son! It's like guy- you're exploring my colon! Could I be more uncomfortable in more ways! HA!

Gemini, I can't believe they kept you awake enough to feel all of this. I am sure glad it is over for you. Hope you start feeling better. I guess doctors do things different. If you ever have to do it again, I would check and see exactly how they go about it.

Sounds like it was alittle rough but now it is over, I hope you can rest some.

    Just sending hugs, Trishann

Wow, I can't believe you endured that awake and they were so mean. Jeepers! You're right, the prep is the worst! I have had it and it is nasty! I have had to drink a gallon every time. Yuck! I am glad it is over for you though.

    Hugs,

wuttup Trishan And Everyone Else Who Posted, My Colonscopy Is Finally Done And Over With. My Day Went Like This. Checked In Hospital, Got Asked About General Health ???, And Got Into My Gown. Was Given A Iv Put In My Right Wrist, Jus The Connection Of Iv Base. Next I Was Transmitted To The Second Floor Where They Connected Some Type Of Fluid First Then Came The Moderate Sedation. ALSO HAD SOME PAIN FLUID INJECTED IN THE IV 2. ABOUT 4 LITTLE SYRINGES. I Kept Stressing My Gastro-specialist Assistant That I Want 2 Be Completely Out More Than 1 Time Because Of My Urinary Problem, Which I Explained 2 Her That My Urinary Problem(ic) Is Very Complicated. I Brought My Self Catheters And Mentioned That I Have Somewhat Of A Urge 2 Go Pee. She Told Me, If U Go 2 The Restroom Right Now, We Are Going 2 Work On The Next Patient. We Kept Bickering Back And Forth, But She Didnt Seem To Want To Take The Time 2 Understand. F-in Lady. (i Should Have Never Apologized 2 Her When My Colonoscopy Was Done.) So, I Didnt Use The Restroom And Went On With The Procedure. I Was Fully Awake, saw Everything, felt Everything And Remember Everything. I Was Completely Awake During The Whole Process. The Most Uncomfortable Part 2 Me Is When They Filled My Colon Up With Air And When They Keep Sliding That Tube Up And Down MY Colon, Where It Feels Like There In The Same Spot Only The Whole Time. Once Done, I Was Wheeled 2 This Empty Room Like 15 Feet Way. I Sat Down Straight On The Bed And Was Ready 2 Go. As I Sat There For Five Mins, I Told Some Other Lady Walking By Im Ready 2 Leave. I Took All These Patches Off My Chest, The Lady Pulled The Iv From My Arm And I Got Dressed And Took Off For The Hall Way. I Eventually Returned Back 2 The Same Room Because I Needed 2 Use The Phone And I Saw My Gastro Specialist With His Lunch And He Explained That My Colon Looks Ok And That There Is A Little Narrowing And Was Given 2 Take 2 Different Medz. He Mentioned I Could Have I.b.s And 2 Come See Him In A Month. He Also Mentioned That I Was Not Supposed 2 Leave That Soon And Told Me 2 Have A Seat. While He Was Eating In Another Room, I Waited For About 3 More Mins And Left, I Waited Downstairs In The Lobby For My Lady 2 Get Me. The Prep Part Was The Hardest...

I would try to continue if all possible, but if your stomach won't let you, I think you will be ok if when you go it is all clear water.

They told me to get two bottle of this fleet stuff to drink and I was only able to drink one. I kept throwing up the other bottle. Then they told me try to take it every 15 minutes and see what happens. Still I threw up. I have acid reflux too and I think that is why I could not take the two bottles. I told them about it but they still was able to do the test. The one bottle did clean me out.

Just do your best and let them decide what they can do. That is the only thing you can do.

    Hope all goes well,
    Sending hugs, Trishann

As Of Rite Now Every Sip I Take I Want 2 Throw Up. HAVING ACID REFLUX WITH CONSTANT BELCHING MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT 2 TAKE IN. Also My Bowels Are All Liquid Already, Is That Possible For An Individual 2 Drink All 4liters, What Would Happen If I Dont Complete The Jug??? Please Help Me..

    Janie,
I have never seen a nurse place a foley for a colonoscopy. Colonoscopies are considered dirty procedures and things like surgeries, incision and drainage procdures, and placement of a PICC line. Also, colonoscopies usually take a minimum amount of time and it actually takes longer to put a catheter in, start the IV and give sedation that it does to look at your nether regions. I hope I answered your question and if I can answer anymore let me know.

    Hugs,
    Barb

Versed and Demerol...thats the usual combo for a colonscopy. If you do NOT want to be awake at all, tell the doctor. I, unfortunately, do not cooperate when I am awake at all. I try and pull the scope out, so they put me way under. Versed is an amnesic (sp?) drug, and if they give you enough of it, and you do wake up, you won't remember a thing. The demerol is for pain, and it really keeps you quite comfortable. A cystoscopy is something totally different when it's done in the office, you're AWAKE with no sedation usually. This is really not a bad procedure, but if you're afraid, tell your doctor you prefer to be as knocked out as possible. You dont need to cooperate, you just have to lay there still.

I've had so many upper and lower scopes I can answer just about any question...and no, no catheter, and no it won't bother your urinary tract or cause you any problems urinating...it's a different place all together!

It'll be fine, I promise. I've only woken up once, and they put me right back to sleep.

If this weenie can handle it, I'm sure anyone else would be just fine.

Gemini, I would ask if they could completely knock you out because you are freaking out. Tell them you have IC which is a bladder condition and that you don't think you can handle being awake for this test.

I have never heard of someone being partial awake but every doctor is different, but again I would ask about it.

    Hugs, Trishann
