  • Platelet Rich Plasma - O shot?

Today I went to my urologist because my pelvic floor dysfunction has gotten so bad I just don't know what to do anymore. I was diagnosed with IC in 2015. I take Bladder Q supplement and have little bladder pain. I follow the IC diet faithfully as well. But I can't get my PF under control. He suggested Platelet Rich Plasma. It's your own stem cells being injectred back into that area to help heal those nerves. Has anyone done this??? Does it work? Is there anything else you can suggest for pelvic floor dysfunction? I have done a lot of physical therapy and they released me a few months ago saying that there was nothing more they could do. Help!

I had $10,000us stem cell treatment done for my severe I.C in Rancho Mirage, California. And honestly, it didn't do a damn thing. They highly exaggerate the success rate. There's honestly just not enough research/testing yet.

Please discuss this with your physicians before contacting any of the clinics that are popping up. There are a lot of good things happening with stem cells, but there are also the quacks out there who are paused, waiting for gullible people. Just be sure to do your research first!

Re: Platelet Rich Plasma - O shot?

I was searching for the latest information on stem cells because I went to a seminar given by the network of doctors that are selling this service. It was free and the consultation that I will attend tomorrow is free also but I suspect there is going to be a lot of arm twisting. I know it is not FDA approved and in fact the latest official information that I could find said it's only in the animal testing stage and safety for humans has not been established. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26686192. I'm replying on this thread also because it seems there is some confusion with platelet rich plasma injections. They are not the same thing at all. I am fortunate enough to go to a top osteopath who trained at the Mayo clinic and who is a sport doctor for one or two of our city's sport teams. He does do PRP. In fact, he just did it for a girlfriend of mine for her hip. I go to him for my arthritis, not IC. He does very advanced ultrasound of tendons, etc. and he has helped my shoulder and knees (with other treatments). I'm positive that he keeps track of the stem cell business (and it is a lucrative one) because he would be doing it for the athletes he treats if he believed there was enough safety and effectiveness evidence for it. So I would not move forward with any stem cell for IC or for arthritis despite any arm twisting until I ask him. Unfortunately, since he is so popular a doctor I won't see him until January. Now I am quite familiar with the fact that urologists are trying stem cells for IC and in fact I went to one several years ago but not seeing the evidence for it yet, I proceeded to get the lipsome/Elmiron instillation instead and that turned out to be very painful for me and had no positive effect. So I am left wondering, after probably about five years or so of doctors trying stem cells for IC, where is all the evidence? What is the success rate? I've been trying to glean this from the ICN threads, but it is hard to tell. I ask ICN Donna, and anyone else what have you heard? Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to reply. I will gladly post what the "arm twisters" tell me tomorrow for sake of information.
I got IC in 1970! I was not diagnosed until 1991. I've tried many drugs and therapies but I tend to only resort to drugs when in a flare because when I am not in a flare (from being good on diet), I suffer only from small bladder volume (like about 7 ozs.) and peeing will relieve the discomfort. When I am feeling relatively normal, I say to myself I am glad I am not on a drug. When I am in a flare, I say, why am I not on a drug! I've recently have been trying to solve my connective issue problems in general. I look to diet and herbs mostly unless it gets really bad. I still think there is great hope for each individual finding a path to healing and there are many.

Any time there is a treatment that is only offered by one individual, or one group of individuals, that sets off the alarms for me. My suggestion: Ask your own doctors about it --- if it's a valid treatment, or if it's in the trial stage, your own doctor will very likely be aware of it. I know there is and has been a lot of stem cell research going on for many different problems and I know that there have been some successes --- but there's always a "but" --- and in this instance, the "but" is researching to be sure your doctor is aware of it and that if it's a trial, the FDA has a record of the trial in progress.
