  • Possible IC

I’m looking for any thoughts or advice. I’m in the process of diagnosing what may or may not be IC.

in May of 2019 I developed a bladder infection after intercourse. It very quickly showed blood and I was treated at an urgent care. It did not start to improve and follow up showed WBCs but culture northing they treated with an additional round of antibiotics.

Fast forward about 6 weeks. Intercourse again and burning/pain starts. Go to gyn since not similar to infection and trace protein. They take culture but she thinks residual infection. It was and treated.

Improved again until intercourse over a long weekend and I just take antibiotics (had from extra pills given during first infection).

Clears and follow up with provider. Refers to urology. I have some issues happen gyn-wise (have a fibroid). Long story short. No issues until intercourse again in December. Go to urology and he starts on nightly nitrofurantoin for two months and recommends a cystoscopy.

Im finally feeling better, able to take baths, living life but no intercourse. Cystoscopy comes before that and I have a reaction to the chlorhexidine. I watched and my urethra was inflamed. Doc claims, but I don’t remember seeing it, one or two petechie. Says possibly IC but needs me to “take one for the team” and attempt intercourse. Well the cystoscopy did a number between the chlorhexidine and the procedure and burning in my nether regions is excruciating. Again call can’t be seen, in pain and up my nitro dose to therapeutic. It somewhat clears. See doc and get scolded and he doesn’t know what to think of the burning. Finally I go to gyn and am diagnosed bacterial infection from the cystoscopy.
Urines all normal and look great.

I don’t quite get better, but attribute burning to possible chemical/allergic reaction. Use moisturizers and burning subsides. Decide to try intercourse.

So day after feel good, am hopeful. Day two going down hill. At gyn appt protein is now detected in urine and he tells me go see my urologist. He can’t see me until Tuesday. So bladder spasms(fluttering) with some pain started last night. I scheduled with my primary to try and treat.

Any suggestions? Has anyone had this?
I’m worried if it’s not IC it will be and I’ve been doing the diet, dh aloe, prelief, and d-mannose. None of which are remotely helping.

i really struggle with an IC diagnosis even being possible when pains and flares are only with intercourse. I could eat and drink whatever I wanted with zero effect, no urgency, no frequency (still none).

im sorry it’s long and it’s a lot. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

    to the IC Network.

It's possible that what you have is IC, but not necessarily so. One thing I noticed in your post is that you had leftover antibiotics --- when those are ordered for a urinary tract infection, the number ordered is usually what the doctor feels you should take to clear it completely. The disadvantage to having some left is that there is the tendency to try them when the discomfort returns, which again means there aren't enough to clear the infection.

It's good that you can see your urologist soon. In the meantime, you could try taking a little baking soda in water to see if that helps.

    Sending healing thoughts,

      Hi Donna,

      Thank you for responding.

It’s a hard thing to explain, I took all of the antibiotics. The primary gives pre-counted antibiotics and it has ten days worth. I only had to do 5 days. So I had the extra.

I went to the primary today after restarting d-mannose on Wednesday. The spasm(fluttering) have stopped and no protein in my urine now. She wants me to continue d-mannose and started macrobid until I see the urologist. She thinks it could be IC and that my trigger is intercourse or that the initial infection was so bad that I may need antibiotics after intercourse for a while.

I’m hopeful today, and hoping the urologist agrees with the primary.

I have a friend who has to take an antibiotic after intercourse -- and has for years. I hope that will resolve your problem.
