  • Help please! Need advice.

I'm in my 40s and used to have frequent cystitis when i was younger but not for many years until about 2 months ago i got a UTI and was prescribed Macrobid, which didn't clear up the infection. So then i was given Cipro and i feel that the infection has now gone (finished Cipro a fortnight ago) but i'm having some residual problems. I had a yeast infection after the Cipro but that has cleared up now but I've noticed that if i get at all dehydrated or drink certain things (eg coffee, lemonade) then within an hour or so i experience bladder spasms as well as burning when i pee. I don't have the urgency or frequency anymore (thank God!) but the pain is very bad, especially if i pee when i don't really need to, such as just before going to bed. Most nights i crawl into bed crying from the pain. I'm fed up with this and am refusing to believe that it might be IC but i don't know what else would do this. Alka-Seltzer helps, so i'm going to also try Prelief. Obviously it's the concentration and acidity of my urine that's causing the problem but i have no idea why this is happening. Shouldn't all the cystitis symptoms have gone by now?

Thanks for any advice anyone can give.
I'm sick of being sick. Fed up with all this autoimmunity/allergies stuff: migraines, eustachian tube dysfunction, asthma, peripheral neuropathy with polyneuritis, Raynaud's disease, acne rosacea, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, IBS (diarrhea type), IC, one deformed kidney, Von Willebrand Disease (a bleeding disorder), drug allergies, food intolerances, life intolerance! And besides all that, i'm missing my tonsils, my gallbladder, my uterus and ovaries... and probably a gazillion brain cells

HI! It seems to me that if you have ic symptoms......you probably have ic....unfortuantly. Coffee, lemonade.....or any of the no no foods and drinks will give me bladder pain. Have you tried AZO for your bladder pain? Elavil helps a lot with the pain, it's prescription tho. My opinion.....find a good IC doctor and get a diagnosis.....then go from there......also start the IC diet immediately! Good luck! Roxie

For IC I use Elmiron, Elavil and Freeze dried Aloe Vera (it works likes Elmiron, but naturally)and Azo as needed. I also take Zegerid, Randitine for Barrett's Esophagus. (which causes me to have constant yeast infections!)I take Cymbalta for Neuopathy/Myopathy pain. I use the Climara patch for menopause symptoms. I'm on a very strict diet because of the IC, IBS and Gastric Bypass. I take Primal Defense Probiotics and whole food Iron.
I no longer have the awful urethral pain! I've been using MSM gel now for 4 mo. and haven't had a flare up or the urethra pain.....it's amazing stuff!!:woohoo:

Sorry you are having symptoms that led you here. It is SO frustrating to have symptoms that won't go away and not know what is causing them.

It is possible that you could have some leftover irritation from the UTI - especially since it sounds like it went on for some time and you just finished the Cipro. Acidic foods/drinks (like lemonade and coffee) can really irritate our bladders. It could be possible that the infection hasn't completely cleared either.

It's also possible you could have IC. If I was in your shoes I would let my doctor know that I am still having symptoms and how long it's been since I finished the antibiotic. If a couple of weeks have passed and you still aren't feeling better I would really push for some help in figuring out why the irritation is still lingering - whether it be continued infection or something else.

In the meantime, if you want to kind of "baby" your bladder to increase the chances for healing you could look over the IC Diet information. It lists lots of foods you might never guess could cause bladder discomfort. Check it out at http:www.ic-network.com/handbook

I sure hope you don't have IC, but if you do you've certainly come to the most excellent place for support and information.

      Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

        Hello..
I agree with VM.. You should just try to not eat the bad foods for awhile, and if this helps, then there is a chance you might have IC..I would then make an appt with a uro..

Thank you all for your advice. I had checked out the IC diet a few days ago so i've been more careful about what i eat lately. For the time being i'm also drinking nothing besides water. I had been drinking mostly iced tea but since i switched to plain water the symptoms seem to have almost disappeared, which is wonderful! Darn that caffeine.

I have a lot of other health problems and a great many of them seem to be allergy/immunity related, so i'm betting this is all part of some syndrome and it's interesting to see that others have similar problems.

By the way, Tylenol PM works wonders for so many things... isn't that strange?

          Thanks again for the advice!

I hope that you don't have IC, but if you do, there are some effective treatments available to help control it.

Just putting yourself on the diet may be all that you need. It isn't always the caffeine that's the problem with tea or coffee --- both are acidic.

            Warm hugs,

              Thank you, Donna.

Too much caffeine has always been a problem for me with my IBS and other health issues, so it's about time i cut it out completely. I don't find giving up coffee, tea or cola difficult but chocolate is another thing all together

However, i've promised my husband (and myself) that i will go without it until Easter

As for other acidic things, i'm usually very careful about avoiding those too, which is why i'm surprised that this - IC or whatever it is - has happened so suddenly.

I can't afford to return to the doctor... the last two visits i was charged over $400! and that was as an ER patient. I'm visiting this country for a few months and my travel insurance has expired. I was counting on nothing very serious happening to me. Oh well, live and learn. I'll just have to try and get through the next few months as painlessly as possible.

Thanks again for the advice. I appreciate it very much!
