  • Cranberry juice, scared?

I went to a new Uro today, one that came highly recommended. She told me to take 500mg of Vitamin C and drink 3 8oz. glasses of Cranberry juice a day! I'm terrified to try it because it contradicts everything I've ever read about IC.
She hasn't diagnosed me with IC yet, she wants to get all my results back in. I did a pelvic ultrasound yesterday(the tech said she saw nothing wrong) and I have to go in for blood tests. If everything comes back normal(I'm assuming they do) she'll diagnosis me with IC. She told me she has many patients with IC that use depend on their daily intake of Vitamin C and Cranberry juice to keep them symptom free. I'm shocked!
I decided to drink one glass of Cranberry juice but I haven't taken the Vitamin C yet, again I'm scared.
One more thing, I urinated twice when I was at her office, afterwards I still had 64cc of urine left. She told me I'm not emptying my bladder completely. She put me on a schedule of going to the bathroom every 2 hours during the day and staying put on the potty for 5 minutes to increase the chances of completely voiding.
Have any of you ever tried any of these techniques, between cranberry juice, vitamin C and bladder training?
Any advice you could give me, I would be very, very grateful.

You are right, that does not sound right. The info they give out from Elmiron (the only oral med for IC right now)says to stay away from ANYTHING acidic. Now some people are more diet sensetitive than others but even I who isn't very diet sensititive at all would be terrified to drink cranberry juice.

It does sound rather strange to me but maybe these patients aren't diet sensetitive. If you don't feel comfortable with the treatments that this uro is suggesting then maybe you want to look for a different uro?

I hope you get some answers and some relief.
    Christine

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

WOW! I have never heard of any Uro suggesting that unless they were absolutely forsure that is was not IC... The test that was run on you would not have determined that..You would need more test like a cysto/hydro or Potassium test.
I would be scared to. I think I would get a second opinion from another URO..Good luck and if you do try the cranberry juice and it feels like a acid bomb going off then you will know that its a good possibility you have IC...

OMG....run away from the cranberry juice and vit. c! When I was first diagnosed I was thinking that I was just getting recurrent UTIs so I drank tons of cranberry juice and ended up so miserable I nearly lost my mind. Unless you have been diagnosed with repeat (and verified) utis, it sounds like you may need to get a second opinion.

Before I was dx, I also came down with what I thought was a UTI and started drinking a ton of cranberry juice, and OMG did it cause me some PAIN. That is when I learned I could not drink the cranberry juice anymore. If you want to try it, I would try a VERY small amount and see how you do, because at least if you do have a reaction, maybe it wont be so bad. Also maybe dilute it. As far as Vit-C, well I personally stay away from it. But I do have a friend who has IC and she can tolerate it fine.

            Good advice

Thanks for the good advice. I drank about 6 oz of the cranberry juice at 6 PM, now it's 8:30 PM and other then going to the bathroom(because I drank 2 BIG glasses of water with the cranberry juice), I'm feeling ok. I like the advice of only drinking a little to see how it goes.
I'm very surprised to hear drink cranberry juice from this doctor, she's a highly recommended doctor well known in this area. I'm actually lucky to have seen her. I went to one Uro who kind of blew me off(telling me I had a fibroid on my bladder which wasn't there). I made an appointment with this doctor and the only available appointment was July 10th. Her office called me yesterday and got me in today because of a cancellation.
She also told me to eat 1/2 cup of blueberries 3 times a day. She(my uro) says that the cranberries and blueberries help to build up the Glucolic(Sorry my spelling) layer in the bladder.
I'll keep you all posted as far as pain goes, I'm hoping for the best.

Hi! Is this URO an IC specialist?? If not, I'd run in the other direction as quickly as possible! I've gone to URO's who aren't IC specialist and they gave me all kinds of crazy advice........before I realized for myself what was crazy and what was sound advice. Good luck......I hope you aren't screaming by morning from the cranberry juice! Roxie

OMG, reading your post, my eyes got so big. I too thought before I was officially dx'd I had uti's so I would drink lots of cranberry juice and beer. (Old southern remedy) Well, I was also eating everything that is a big no no, go dx'd and stopped all that, and the raging flare I had been in for years stopped. I mean I am still in constant pain, but not like I was before all the treatments. They are just now thinking maybe the cranberry pills, but I still would not try it. I love Cranberry Juice too. Good Luck.

My mouth just about dropped when i read your post!! My bladder is so bad off according to two Uros that it isn't even funny!! Cranberry Juice?? I haven't had any since before i was dx with this, and even though I am not as diet sensitive as a lot of people (I guess its because of the medications I'm on??) I would not touch this if its the last thing to drink on earth. I would either or like someone else suggested find another doctor who knows what they are talking about.

Ok, no offense, but I don't think your doctor has any idea about IC!! I can't imagine recommending Cranberry juice and Vitamin C for IC...It hurts me just to think about drinking it and taking the Vitamin C. If you really think you have IC then I wouldn't do it! And I would think if you are drinking it and taking the Vitamin C and it isn't bothering you, then maybe (hopefully) you don't have IC? Well I wish you luck, but if you are in a lot of pain after drinking it, then don't drink it, go with your gut and do what you think is right for you.

I actually have a friend who has IC with the severe glomulerations(sp) and she is ok with taking Vit-C daily. Now if I did that, it would send me through the roof with pain. I cannot tolerate it or cranberry juice. I really think it all depends on your body in how you will react. No one person with IC is the same and all the causes are different I believe.

Dr.s Nurse TOLD me to drink cranberry juice all weekend!!

After reading all these I had to post! I've been having horrid smelling urine for about a month. I missed my monthly Uro check up a few weeks ago as I fell down and fractured and dislocated my ankle in 6 places. So I decided to wait a bit longer to see the Dr. as car rides are very painful.

Anyway I finally called his office today to tell them I am having the bad urine odor, small amount of blood when wiping after urinating, severe pelvic and bladder pain that's getting worse each day (I'm sure my latest HUGE flare is caused by the stress of the ankle surgery and not being able to walk or put any weight on my foot until next week) the NURSE told me to drink pure cranberry juice all this weekend!!!! (guess she thinks I have an infection?) and for me to come in on Monday so they could do a urine test and speak with my Dr.

I can't believe she told me to do that. But...I thought well maybe they have reasons for me drinking this that I don't know about. Had hubby drive to store and I drank 2 glasses today. I now have horrible pains and diariha (spell?) I am NOT drinking anymore of the cranberry juice. I guess I was being naive thinking........ well if the nurse said to drink the cranberry juice i should do as she suggested. But it's wrong I realised! I like my URO and he has been a great supportive Dr. Guess I should have insisted on having him call me personally before hubby rushed out to get the "juice of death"

I feel so crappy right now. Top it off with a huge cast up to my knee, using a walker to get to the bathroom is enough of a struggle for me daily. Now with the "runs" I am exhausted from getting up and hobbling to the bathroom every 15 minutes!
I had a nice crying fest by myself today
