  • Diagnosed by internal exam only?

After a month of terrible low back pain and low pelvic pain (a trip to the E.R.)my gyno did an internal exam and the pain just about put me on the ceiling..she immediately said "IC" , Gave me ELMIRON and sent me home..She say it'll take a month for the meds to work and all will be fine..No follow up..no other tests.."see ya!" After looking IC up on the net...ELMIRON takes 4-6 months to MAYBE help in 30% of patients...and $80 (I have insurance) to "see" if it'll help?? I realize i need to be pro-active and look for a uro/gyno doc.
I have alot...I mean ALOT of lower back pain and it is NOT from a ruptured disc etc (checked that out)..Along with the low pelvic pain. I have bouts of urgency to urinate..pressure to urinate..but..I do not "go" more than a dozen times a day..I have NO pain urinating...
I can NOT imagine having to live like this the rest of my life...I understand there are people that have worse symptoms OR that diagnosis could be something worse...BUT, my life is otherwise full of "WORSE" situations.....
I guess I'm hoping this is a "female" problem that can be fixed with a hysterectomy etc... Thank you for any comments..

    to the IC Network.

Unfortunately, interstitial cystitis is not a problem that can be fixed. I do agree with you that seeing a urologist is a good idea. If you scroll to the top of this page and click on "Professionals" you may find a uro in your area who has been recommended by another IC patient.

There are many different treatment options for IC --- elmiron is definitely not the only one and it does take up to six months or longer to be effective.

The IC diet can also be a huge help if what you have is interstitial cystitis. You'll find the link to the latest food list in my signature below. I suggest you begin to follow it today.

    Sending warm healing thoughts,

      urologist before hysterectomy

Take my advise I didn't listen to the first GYN
That told me she thought I had IC though
I also had a failed ablation I didn't want to
Even listen about IC .I found a gyn to do hyst. Only to irritate my IC and now I am having pain just as bad if not worse than before.
