  • Irritated Urethra

I am a 23 year old female and recently have been having a really irritated urethra with no other pain besides in my urethra. I think it began after a UTI. The irritation feels like a burning that is on and off almost every day, some days I will have a day without it. Once a month I have a really bad "flare" as you would call it, where for about a half hour the pain is so intense, it just feels like a really bad UTI. I also have had a long history with recurrent UTIs. The second I take a sip of alcohol I can feel my urethra begin to burn so I do not drink at all anymore. Heating pads seem to help with the burning feeling, and I also try to drink a lot of water when I have the feeling as well but I'm not sure if these actually help of if the sensation goes away after a little bit.

I do not have frequency to urinate though. The burning feeling does kind of make me want to go pee but I know that it is just the burning feeling and not an actual urge to go pee.

I went to the doctors and she suspected that I had urethritis and gave me doxcyciline (sp?) for a week. The antibiotics helped while I was on them but the feeling came back after I was off them. She said I might have IC if it is not urethritis and refered me to a urologist which I have not gone to yet.

I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback from people who actually suffer from IC because I am really curious if this sounds like what a lot of you go through. Thank you!

If the burning is at the mouth of the urethra it could be from external causes. It's how I learned that a clorinated swimming pool isn't okay for me.

You might want to think about giving the IC diet a try while you're waiting for a diagnosis. It can't hurt you and just might help.

If it is at the mouth of your urethra like Donna said it can be external. If you feel like it is further up in your urethra you might be mistaken as to what is causing you pain. I speak from experience on this one. In the beginning I was hurting so much I couldn't figure out where the pain was coming from. For a while I was convinced it was my urethra until my uro touched something inside of me and I came up off the table, I told him THAT was the spot. It was my bladder. So, it can be very hard to indentify where the burn or pain is originating sometimes.

Are you going to see the urologist as suggested? I think I would if I were you, that way you will know exactly what is going on. I hope you find relief soon.

I don't think it could be anything that's irritating it externally because I began using non-scented soaps and tried using gentle laundry detergent. It seems like the urethral problem that people are explaining in another thread, but I wasn't sure if it is a condition of IC.

I guess I will try some things that they mention on that thread such as glucosimine and the teat tree oil. The feeling is driving me crazy.

I have began the diet just yesterday and hope to see some improvement from it!

        Thank you for replying!

Also this is an email i recieved from one of my friends she has said this helps with this sorta thing:
"Hey! I know that this cream was just recently created by a doctor from UT. I am not sure if it is sold a lot of places yet and I know not many doctors even know about it. But it works great for me! The tube just says 30 estrad/lido/clobet .01/5/.05% If you wanted to ask about it the pharmacy that made it for me is Spence's in Logan UT 435-753-8500. Just ask about a cream that is support to help IC people who have painful intercourse. "

          Best of luck!

That sounds like an interesting cream. Maybe I will mention at my uro appointment.

The weirdest thing is that I am back on antibiotics until my appointment and I am pain free. I wonder if this is some sort of bacterial thing that they aren't seeing in a regular urine test? The thing about this is that I can't be on antibiotics forever.

Antibiotics can have an anti-inflammatory effect so that might be why they are helping you. I hope you find some answers at your next appt.

If antibiotics have a anti inflammatory effect then has anyone tried any natural anti inflammatory supplements such as fish oil? I wonder if that would help?

I take fish oil daily but haven't noticed that it helps my IC. I haven't read anything about that in relation to IC.

There are other's on the site that are more knowledgeable about natural therapies than me though. I don't use many of them in my treatment. Maybe you could post this question on the alternative therapy forum.
