  • What to do next?

I've been having pelvic pressure/urgency/frequency for two weeks, with lower back pain, which has subsided.

I don't have burning while urinating, only afterwards. I didn't have sharp pain until last night. However, I also started my period yesterday, although I don't normally have that type of pain with my period.

I took a home UTI test last week. Positive for leukocytes, negative for nitrates.

I've been keeping track somewhat of how often I void for the past two weeks--13 on good days, 20+ on bad days. Last night was terrible. I was up and down all night. I don't have the problem of feeling the need to urinate, but not having enough urine in my bladder. I have plenty of urine. It's just the pressure that's really uncomfortable.

I urinate a lot anyway. I'm always joking that I have the world's smallest baldder. But, I've never experienced this pressure feeling before. Also, my urethra felt itchy last week??

When I was 20, I did have my urethra dilated for a burning sensation that would not go away--after trying antibiotics. No problems since then until now--except for having to pee a lot, which I thought was just my anatomy.

I have an appointment with a clinic later this week, then another with my gyno next week. I'm fearful that this is not an infection, but something else--and the hubby and I are going out of the country for a week on April 14th. I scared that what I experienced last night will happen while we are on vacation and away from a hospital.

Can your bladder/urethra possibly be just irritated from diet factors, yet NOT be IC? (I should say that typically I drink 1-2 liters of sparkling water a day, 1-4 cups coffee/black/green tea, and a glass of wine with dinner. I also like really spicy foods--I've been avoiding all of this for two weeks, hoping to see some improvement)

Can the frequency/urgency be from an infection? As I mentioned, I had very little pain until last night, and no burning/pain while urinating.

Thank you for any advice you can share ~T

Yes, it can be irritated from other factors. It can also be IC or any number of other things. It is good that you have appointments scheduled. Try looking at the IC diet and work on eliminating the problem foods, even if you don't have IC it can help calm your bladder.

You might call your Dr and ask if you can stop by for a urine test for uti. It is a very quick test and many times you can just pop in to check.

    Best wishes, keep us updated,

      Sandra-thanks for your reply.

I will see the doctor on Thursday. She said she could not do a UTI test until my period was over, but I could come in and get antibiotics now, if I was in a great deal of pain.

I've decided to wait. Last night has been the only time I've had pain-sharp pain, that is. I've had burning off and on, but I often have that to some degree before my period.

Would a UTI wax and wane over the course of two weeks?

That I don't know, I suppose one could. I am not a medical authority so I really can't say on that one. Try and cut out soft drinks and coffee in the meantime and drink as much spring water as you can. Hopefully that will help calm the inflamation down some. Keep us posted on how things go for you.

          Back again

I'm starting my second round of Cipro. I went back to my workplace clinic on Monday, and the nurse took a urine sample--no sign of UTI, no WBC's this time--just that I was dehydrated.

Since starting Cipro over a week ago, my symptoms have somewhat improved. I don't know if it's due to the antibiotic or my attempts at a more alkaline diet.

I will be seeing my gyno on Thursday. What kind of questions should I ask her about this? Should I request any specific tests?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Just write down ALL of your symptoms and it would be good for you to take your voiding diary you kept also. That was she can see how often you are going to the restroom. She may want to try somethings based on your symptoms or do further tests. Look below in my signature and read the AUA guidelines or diagnosing and treating IC, they should be very helpful to you right now.

Good luck and let us know how things go!!

I was up a lot last night urinating. This really seems to strike me at night.

I had more pain than usual. I've been cutting back on liquids--could that cause my urine to be more concentrated?

Please don't cut back on liquids. It will cause the urine to be concentrated and even more irritating. I hope you get some answers soon --- not knowing what's going on is the worst time.

Donna is right, DO NOT cut back on drinking water. Especially since you have already been told that you were dehydrated. You need to drink more to keep your urine diluted and whith the antibiotics you are taking it could cause problems.

                    Hang in there,

                      Hi Donna & Sandra,

I've DEFINITELY learned my lesson on liquids. As I mentioned before, the pain has not been too bad--primarily urgency & pressure--but, last night? Oh boy. Don't want to do that again.

My gyno gave me Bactrium today and Pyridium (sp?) to take. She did a pelvic exam and said everything looks and feels fine. Once again, the urine test showed leukocytes but no bacteria. She sending the remainder on for a culture. I should have results on Monday.

I asked her if I was being paranoid about IC. Her response was a "little bit"--but then again, she did give me the name to two urologists, so I took that to mean if the Bactrium does not resolve this, then that should be my next step.
