just a quick query, does anyone know if it is realistic to kind of 'self test' for IC by eating lots of forbidden stuff and seeing if a flare ensues?

I think a better idea would be to avoid the forbidden stuff and see if you feel better.

I too think your best bet would be to try the diet for a few weeks. Why would you risk the pain of a massive flare when you can find out in a less painful way. I know the diet is not the funnest thing in the world but I would take it over the pain of a massive flare any day.
Also since everyone's triggers can be different how do you know which foods are bad FOR YOU? That's where the 'try it' items come in to play as you introduce them one by one slowly. If you eat them all at the same time you could end up with a huge flare and still not know what exactly flares you.

lol I have heard of people doing this... I thought about it as well, but then its sooo not worth the pain/ peeing.... hahaha.28 yrs old,
I have little to no problems now with my bladder, unless I am very stressed out, I forget to take Elmiron for a few days, or I eat or drink something that I know is a trigger...(i.e) like eating a tomato or drinking tea.... Took a long time to get here, but it IS possible to feel good againI just want people who are new to know that IT CAN get better, and for every one person who is suffering, there are hundreds of others who feel GREAT because they have control of thier IC.
What Works: Tylenol 3's, Pyridium, Elmiron (Going on 4 years now!) HOT showers!!!

There was a time in the beginning when a lot of my symptoms subsided and I thought I was fine so I spent a week eating mexican food with margaritas, and drinking regular coffee and tea. Was not the smartest way to test anything. It took me six weeks to get rid of most of the pain it caused me. I should have waited until I was symptom free for a few months and then tested a small amount of something slowly, one at a time.
