  • Really struggling & confused

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if someone could help as I’m really struggling at the moment. I got diagnosed with urethral syndrome back in 2015 and the past 2 years I’ve been symptom free with an odd flare here and there but learned to ignore it as it was so mild.

This past month has been absolute hell for me. So I got the dreaded feeling of a UTI went to the doctors and got prescribed antibiotics just in case. 3 rounds later and I feel no better I went for a vaginal swab on Friday and awaiting a result and a urine sample was sent off yesterday for a culture.

The symptom I’m currently experiencing is extreme discomfort in the urethra. It doesn’t hurt at all when I pee I just keep getting pain in my urethra and it’s occasionally itchy too. Can this be a symptom of urethral syndrome/IC? I’m getting extremely panicked that I actually have a low grade infection and nothing is clearing it up. I do understand I’ve been diagnosed with urethral syndrome but I just can’t help but think it’s an infection.

To top it off I have some dip sticks at home and I think I’ve now got an obsession with checking so I need to Chuck them out soon. But basically everything is negative one minute then I can take another and I’m positive for leukocytes which of course, panics me. But I have read that leukocytes can be a sign of inflammation not just infection? I’m just so upset and at my wits end.

    Thanks for reading

Have you had a urine culture done? If not, I think that would be a good idea. Also --- are you following an IC diet? I suggest you have a look at the diet list to see if you can identify anything you have ingested recently that could be causing you to flare. We can all be very different and there may be things on the potentially irritating foods and drinks that aren't a problem for you, but it could help you feel better. Please post and let me know how you are doing.

    Sending well wishes,
    Donna

      Hi Donna,

I did have a urine culture I’ve had 2 now one originally when it all flared and one on Monday and everything is negative and within normal range. I took another sample in to the doctors today and all is well but they haven’t sent it off for a culture this time even though I asked but it’s probably because I’ve been a little excessive with it but, when I feel like utter rubbish I just would do anything to feel well as we all would. So the symptoms have also improved this week I’ve noticed when I don’t think about it it disappears to the point it’s barely noticeable which I find odd.

I also haven’t followed the IC diet in a long while now as I was in remission for a very long time so it’s not been in my thoughts which was nice while it lasted! But I’ll definitely check out the IC diet again thank you I think mine is honestly caused by stress and then because I feel pain or discomfort i focus on it more and it gets 10X worse

Overall since I posted the thread my symptoms have improved and the only discomfort I feel is the very end of my urethra it feels like it’s being scratched but that’s the only symptom I now have which is a massive improvement to how I felt

Stress can absolutely increase symptoms. That, along with diet, could definitely be causing your symptoms --- I'm glad you're feeling better and hope it continues.

I just had a thought --- have you changed personal or laundry soaps? And do you take tub baths? When I switched to showers only, even though nothing feels better to me than a hot bath, I stopped having infections.

        Warm hugs,
        Donna
