Sometimes I wake up in the morning, and I have almost no pain from IC. (that's a good feeling!) But, when I get up to go to the bathroom, it is AFTER I urinate that the pain begins. It's as if some action of the bladder necessary to urinate, or the urine running over the bladder neck and urethra, sets off the pain. Just wondering, trying to understand this crazy disease!

I think it has alot to do with that during an 8 hour period during the day you go more than the 8 hour period you are sleeping. So because the urine sits in the bladder longer it causes so much pain. The first morning urine always seems to be the worst.

I have this same thing too..only sometimes it happens during the day also. Not sure what to do about it, if anything.Currently taking Elmiron 3 times a day, Ditropan XL 10 mg, 1 time a day, Elavil 10 mg, 1 time a day.
I also use a vaginal cream once a week and I follow an IC diet and use Prelief.

Thank you everyone for your comments!
This morning, I woke up without pain AND it didn't hurt when I urinated!! Of course I sat there trying to figure out what the difference was, if anything. Could have something to do with being 5 days out from my first DMSO treatment in a long time, and/or taking a Cipro before bed because I had intercourse which I had stopped doing a long time ago when my UAs were always negative for bacteria, or being off the Orthoevra patch for 5 days replacing it with Vivelle dot 0.1 mg so I don't dip so low estrogen-wise on my week off the OrthoEvra to have my period; who can say? Also I had been taking Vicodin as needed for about 10 days rather than resisting taking it, and perhaps that was enough to cause a break in the pain cycle.
I wonder if the pain on urination is because some of us have a significant urethral involvement with our IC? Mine seems to rotate from bladder/urethra to just urethra. I'd take the "just urethra" any day if I had to choose.
Anyway, thanks again for your comments!
Diana.
