  • Urethral Pain?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has urethral pain as a primary symptom? That is where the main pain is for me. I have twinges and even sharp stabbing pains in my bladder, but my urethra is in constant pain.

Also, is there any evidence linking IC with trauma to the bladder or urethra? My urethra is so scarred and damaged by all the surgeries and fistula repairs that I'm wondering if that couldn't be the cause of my IC. The mucous lining could have been damaged as a result of all the trauma. Also, my bladder was overloaded with urine (1400 cc) because my sling was too tight and they didn't act quick enough to place the cath to empy the bladder. This happened at least twice. Just curious if anyone thinks there could be a connection.

I'm really nervous about allowing them to do the cystoscopy because of my history. My DR is fairly sure I have IC. My urine always has a high WBC count and often has RBC, but doesn't grow bacteria. I'm following the IC diet and I was taking Elmiron, but I can't tolerate it.

    Thanks!!

Hi Melissa! I do have urethral pain as well, but it's not my chief complaint. It feels like a burning and stabbing pain. Ice packs in between your legs can help. I feel like a broken record because I've given this suggestion so much lately, but you can also freeze water in the fingers of rubber gloves and put the "finger" into your vagina to give some urethral relief as well.

Since no one is too sure exactly what causes IC, the trauma you experienced may have caused it or may have just "pushed it over the edge" and caused you to become symptomatic.

There are a couple different diagnostic tests that your doc can use to diagnose IC. I would talk with your doc about the test options and which one may be right for you. Also, make sure you have a uro that is experienced in IC so you are getting hopefully the best care.

It's great that you're doing the diet, that's a big help for many people. Sorry the elmiron didn't work, but hopefully you and your doc will find a good med combination soon.

    Good luck!!

I also have problems with urethral soreness - my bladder seems ok, but up in the urethra is a different matter. I suspect the lining between the urethra and the vagina in my case, and I think all mine is linked to atrophy aggravated by repeated yeast infection, using a continence stimulator, two pelvic surgeries in the last 3 years, tissue reaction to stitches post surgery, strep G infection plus using a vaginal oestrogen cream which irritated even more....

In my own case, I am sure that the area needs a rest from all this trauma to recover properly.

HI there! I've had severe urethral pain for over 2 yrs now.....IC for pushing 30 yrs. My husband read online..and here on this site...about a product called MSM gel. He bought some for me 2 weeks ago and I've been using it now for 11 days and I NO LONGER have urethral pain! Also I haven't had a flare up since starting to use it either! It's AMAZING stuff! It works as an anti inflammatory and I apply it twice a day. You might want to try that...(as I found no other product that ever gave me relief!) ...Good luck Roxie

For IC I use Elmiron, Elavil and Freeze dried Aloe Vera (it works likes Elmiron, but naturally)and Azo as needed. I also take Zegerid, Randitine for Barrett's Esophagus. (which causes me to have constant yeast infections!)I take Cymbalta for Neuopathy/Myopathy pain. I use the Climara patch for menopause symptoms. I'm on a very strict diet because of the IC, IBS and Gastric Bypass. I take Primal Defense Probiotics and whole food Iron.
I no longer have the awful urethral pain! I've been using MSM gel now for 4 mo. and haven't had a flare up or the urethra pain.....it's amazing stuff!!:woohoo:

            ROXY,

Is your pain at the urethral opening? Mine is more at the top of the urethra, like at the bladder neck. I am just curious as to where your pain is/was? I am guessing it is at the opening & that is why the MSM gel works there?

I have the urethra pain too. Most of the time it just burns but I will get stabbing pains as well. Sometimes the pain will go up to my left shoulder and then other times down my left leg to foot. Haven't figured out why just the left side. It gets worse before and during my period.

topcop, I haven't read about your frozen glove idea. What do you say when someone looks in your freezer but it does sound like a good idea. If I lived alone I would try it. I use the lidocaine gel in the urethra which seems to help for a little while.

HI! I've had urethra pain for the past 2+ years but had severe ic pain for the past 25+ yrs.
My pain is around the opening of the urethra and inside. It's a terrible pain.....some times it starts at the beginning of a flare.....other times it's just the urethra hurting. When it's bad I can't sit or walk or stand for long. It's miserable!
The MSM has been amazing for me! I wish I'd known about it years ago! Since I started using it almost 2 weeks ago I haven't had any urethra pain and haven't flared! The website says it works as an anti inflammatory and heals. I think it helps with those nerve endings that are so irritated from the IC.....that's my theory......but I just know it's great not to have pain! My husband and I are actually looking forward to sex this weekend.....and we haven't been to that point in months! Roxie

                  Wow,

I have urethral pain too, and it does seem to come on before I'm going to flare. How much do you apply, and what brand are you using?
