  • I wonder if tampons could be related to IC?

I was just sitting here thinking I wonder if there is a link?

  • #2
It seems like everyone have their only opinion about IC but I also wonder about the tampons, but the thing is men also get IC. But I still think tampons can maybe cause injuries that can cause a problem. I wonder how many of us did use tampons. To me, that is a question to really think about.

I've tried to use tampons and could never do it. Within five minutes of using one, I'd be in extreme pain. My stomach would get really queasy and I'd feel faint-horrible feeling!

I've read they can encourage infections by introducing bacteria. My friend's Dr. always told her to avoid them and I thought she was crazy but I later read that they can be problematic.

I started being unable to use them when I became symptomatic. I used them for years before that. But within five minutes of applying one I'd being removing it frantically! I never knew why but now it all makes sense.

never used them never tried either.

In my 6th grade health class we were told that you can get toxic shock syndrome from them and it killed a woman, ever since that day I had no desire to try them. It was bad enough dealing with the newness of a period let alone have to worry about when to take out a tampon.

Im glad to see im not the only one that hasnt used them, a gyno i went to see recently kind of made fun of me for not trying them.

Im sure like anything it could have contributed to IC for some.

                Lyme disease diagnosed 11/05
vulvar vestibulitis diagnosed 2/06 -worst case she has ever seen..very bad.
                IC diagnosed with hydro/cysto- may 17, 2006

Over growth of lactobicilli found 8/07 treating with doxy.

Was able to get my first internal exam evaluation for PFD....wohoo 1/18/07:woohoo:

8/22/07- was able to get my first speculum exam, with pap

Strep D found in bladder with United medical labs May 2006
2 strains of strep in stool culture 9/06
high Strep ASO titre found 10/06

                NEW MED

About to start valium supositories for PFD

                Trigger point injections- oct 07

                Current meds:
Neurontin- 100mg at night supposed to work up to 300mg if i can tolerate it
                Zanaflex 2mg
IC and low oxalate diet, no sugar diet
Xanax for appointments to help relax me since they cause so much pain

Started PT 3/07, PT has really helped me in ways I never knew that it would

                Meds ive tried
                Lyrica
                Klonopin
                Singulair
                Claritin
                Pyridium
Soma- can barely tolerate half a pill
Atropine cream- didnt seem to work, although i found out I was applying the creams wrong
                Estradiol cream
Urelle- caused worse bladder spasm and retention

Various antibiotics for lyme which caused yeast and made the IC and VV worse

waiting for the next chronic illness to pop up

hummmm. thanks. wonder if its possible if a chemical used in making them or other products could activate something and possibly carry it somehow one of many things I guess we can ponder on.

I did use them in my younger age but I think like most of us now, it is almost impossible because of the pain issue. It seems like alot of things can irritate you if you have IC but it is not the main cause. I try to stay away from things that will bring more pain. I think that is the best thing we can do for ourselves for now.

The last time I had a period, which was Dec or something I think I used them but my symptoms were not as bad as they are now. I have no idea if I would be able to use one now. I'll have to check w/ my gyn to see when she wants me to stop the contious bc and have a period. I am not looking forward to that pain.
                      Christine

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

Proud wifey of Shane, mommy to Griffin, and step-mom to Logan and Gage
Also proud mom to the best Bullmastiff on earth, Claus

For those who do want to use tampons, there are chemical free brands that don't have bleach and other irritants in them. I still don't think I could use them, but don't need to try so I won't ever know.

Never used them myself either. So I don't think that was the cause of my IC
