  • Chronic low grade fever anyone?

I've had symptoms of IC since March of last year after having the NovaSure procedure (lining of uterus removed due to heavy periods). I was finally diagnosed a few weeks ago by having a cysto/hydro. The bladder pictures aren't pretty. The same time my IC pain started, I started having a low grade fever around 99.2 to 100.2. I have the fever about 1/3 of the time. My gyn, uro and family dr. say it shouldn't be caused by IC. I've had lots of blood work done, a chest X ray, urine testing, CT scan and nothing is wrong. The fever gives me the chills and I'm shaking when it's 90 degrees outside. Anyone else ever had this? Thanks...Sue
3/06 IC symptoms began immediately after endometrial ablation procedure called NovaSure
5/07 IC diagnosed by cystoscopy with hydrodistention finally after 14 months of doctor's appointments and pain

Medications: Elmiron since 8/07, Atarax, Synthroid & Cytomel for low thyroid, Lisinopril for high blood pressure, Xanax for anxiety as needed, Vitamin D 50,000 units once a week

Supplements: MSM/glucosamine, Quercetin, Desert Harvest Aloe Vera, Flora Biotic 16, Magnesium, Citracal, B-complex

What's worked: IC diet, physical therapy for pelvic floor dysfunction, TENS, rescue instillations and acupuncture

Yes, Yes, Yes! I have mentioned this to lots of doctors and they look at you like you are crazy, but I tend to run a low grade fever a lot of the time. It is usually when I am hurting or flaring. The best explanation that I have heard is that it is probably due to the inflammation or pain. I don't usually have the chills. My normal temp is around 97 and when I run the fever it is about 98.8 to 99ish. My cheeks will turn bright red and my hands will feel like they are on fire. When my husband or daughter touch me, they will immediately say "you have fever, don't you?". Lately I have been told that this is common with fibromyalgia which often accompanies IC. I would keep letting your doctor know about the fever because there may be an underlying infection. I don't know since I am not a doctor. I think I have read where other ICers say that they run a low grade fever also. Hope you feel better soon.

      Sue,

When my IC flares it's not uncommon for me to have a low fever, and about half of those fevers will bring varying degrees of the chills. I don't know the how or whys, but it's happened often enough that I'm certain these fevers of mine are IC related.

Thanks for the replies. My fever sometimes is worse with flares but other times appears for no reason. I feel it's IC related but 3 doctors said it shouldn't be. The question for me is whether I should chalk it up to IC or see my doctor again for more testing. I had the blood test looking for whatever it is they see in people with lupus and was told I don't have that. When I have the fever it exhausts me and makes it hard for me to do things. It's very annoying dealing with that and the IC pain too!

The day before I had my in office cysto for the uro to rule out bladder cancer I flared. The morning of the cysto they took my temp and said that I had a low grade fever and freaked out. I have wondered if it was from my flare but I don't take my temp enough to know if I get them more often.

I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.

I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

Gopher, I would keep telling your doctor about the fever so that they can rule out anything else that may be going on in your body. I can so relate to the fatigue from it. My doctor told me to take Bidex 400 (6 tablets a day) to help with the fatigue. It is the same thing as Mucinex (guaffesin-?sp) but is stronger and cheaper to buy at the pharmacy. My ins. will not cover it because it is available OTC, but I get a bottle of 100 for $18 at Walgreens. I am not sure if it really helps or not. Sometimes I think it does and then sometimes I think it doesn't. Keep us posted on what you find out.

              fever

HI EVRYONE I TOO HAVE BEEN GETTING LOW GRADE FEVERS WHEN I FLARE. 99.4 99. AFTER READING THESE THREADS I REALIZE IT'S A COMMON ACCURANCE. I HAVE URINE STICKS AND DONT HAVE AN INFECTION. HOWEVER IAM IN A TERRIBLE FLARE. I WAS TOLD WHEN YOUR IN A FLARE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM CAN REALLY KICK IN AND THAT COULD CAUSE A FEVER. HATE THIS SO MUCH. I MUST CONCLUDE THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON. HOPE WE ALL FEEL BETTER SOON. IC/FIBRO/ELMIRON/CYMBATA/ETC.

Ladies I am guessing here, but my daughter always get a low grade fever whenever she over do it, fatigue. Then when she does rest the fever is gone. I can't help from wondering maybe that is the same with IC'ers, because our bodies do get very fatigue. Especially also when we are fighting those flares our bodies are worn out.

Hi Everyone, I Also Fight Low Grade Fever 99.0-99.5. When I First Noticed It Was When I Had A Wisdom Tooth Cutting. After I Had It Removed The Fever Continued. A Few Months After The Tooth Was Removed I Was Dignosed With Ic. The Fever Still Comes And Goes. So I Think It Could Be The Ic Doing It.

                      Hello:

I am sooo glad this subject has been brought up. Ever since my IC got bad I have been having low grade fevers/chills with flares. (99-100). I too was tested for lupus and other diseases which all came back negative. My doctor said the fevers are not related to the IC but are anxiety related. I felt like an idiot. I am glad now I know that others with IC have the same symptoms. There is soo much the docs dont know.

                        fevers and doctors

I too told my doctor about the fevers and the migraines that almost always come around the same time. its almost like a cycle.
My first symptoms were the migraine headache and sharp pain in my left kidney. Then a big bloody show when I went to the bathroom. Thank God I had symptoms that they could not just discount (blood in my urine ,a lot) so they did not have a problem giving me pain meds. Every time I brought up the migraines or the fever I was told they were not associated. It was just a coincidence that they happen at the same time . I knew better but it feels so good to know that I was not imagining it. They really are connected. Just like the sinus problems. I had a hard time believing that sinus problems are connected but I just read something that explained it clearly to me. It has to do with the mast cells. they also line the sinus cavity !!!! and they go out of control there too !!!!!!!
thats why my sinus burns and burns.

Thank god for this site and for all of you too !!

When I'm flaring and spend most of my time in bed for long periods of time...I'm speaking of REALLY bad flares that last for weeks or months, I tend to run a low grade fever. When I was in the hospital for a week and not able to get out of bed at all, I had a fever the entire time. Both my dr and nurse said that is not uncommon when bedridden for extended periods of time, although I did have other issues going on at the time that definitely could have been the reason for the fever in addition to being bedridden.

But, blah, I've been fighting both a flare and a upper resp. infection the past 3 weeks and the fever has been coming and going...always comes back in the night even if I don't have one during the daytime when I'm up and around.
