  • Blood in stool

I didn't know where to post this! About two weeks ago I saw what looked like blood in my stool. It just looked like a red spot but did not diffuse in the water. Then a week ago I saw what looked like it again. I went to my primary care doc and he did a test and didn't see anything, but sent me to a gastro doc anyway. He did a test and said there was blood showing but I was starting my period. I told him this and he said "well let's hope that is what it is". Now I terrified cause I don't get the colonoscopy until July 11th.
If it was blood wouldn't it melt (?) in the water? Any thoughts........

If it was a clot from menstruation, it wouldn't dissolve very quickly. I'm glad you were able to get the colonoscopy scheduled so quickly. I know it's worrisome for you.

Blood in the stool, if that's what it was, is not necessarily a medical emergency or anything to be afraid of. It could range from the worst, like an inflammatory bowel disease, to internal hemmorhoids that are irritated. Hopefully it's nothing, but you're doing the right thing by getting the colonoscopy done. Let us know what you find out.

04/17/09 Crohn's disease almost killed me with a combo of extreme constipation from pain medications. My bowel ruptured, I almost died from peritonitis and spent several days in the ICU then more in a private room on the floor. If you have any questions about severe constipation from pain meds please don't hesitate to send me a message.

I agree with Sandy. Nothing to panic about, but good to get checked out. Are you on elmiron? I think that is one of the possible side affects. Talk to your doctor about that.

thanks, cause I am in a panic. I am taking Elmiron and did tell the gastro doc about the IC and that I was taking Elmiron, but he didn't say anything about that.

When I had my one and only attack of ulcerative colitis 10 years ago it began with blood on my stool - then more of same. Then uncontrollable diarrhea - I mean like 20 times a day. Soon I was dripping blood on the floor and filling the toilet bowl with it. I went to one of the best gastroenterologists in the world at the University of Chicago and he saved my colon.

Just be sure the gastro you go to is the best as many of them just want to go straight to surgery.

Just to calm you down a bit, if it's just a little bit (like a spot) of fresh red blood it's likely from a fissure (a crack or irritation in your anus) that often occurs if you are constipated or have hemmoroids (which can be internal) . I get that occationally. It's not anything to worry about. But, it's good to have it checked out by the doc.

had the colonosopy today and he didn't find any polyps, but he did find some infection that he sent to the lab. After taking the phoso soda (laxative) last night I had terrible abdominal pain which radiated to my back and thighs. I have never had this pain before and am wondering if it is related to the IC. I't better now but my back still aches a little bit.

I had the same problem because I am taking a lot of med that cause constipation. Are you having problems with that?
My doc wanted to try me on laxatives and stool softener before referring me to a gastro doc. That helped. I haven't had any blood since.
Mine was the same as you described. It would not dissolve.

Having blood in my stools often from UC I would say that it does normally thin in the water.

I wouldn't be too worried on the time!
