  • IC out of remission, now with new symptom?

I overindulged a bit this holiday (baked ham) and caused a mild flare, which is now pretty much under control... but now I have a new persistant symptom.

It's I think, a urethral spasm. It starts at the base of the bladder down to the opening, where it is strongest. It's like the muscle gives little pulses. It's not painful, but it is extremely irritating. Especially because the close proximity to uhmmm... certain female parts... causes them to be affected as well.

Has anyone else dealt with this? They mainly hit early in the morning, usually when my husbands alarm wakes me up and I go pee. They start right after. If I manage to fall back asleep the sensation can cause some interesting dreams as well.....

Anyways. I'm not sure what to do for this. I can't take antispasmodics because they cause my bladder to pretty much shut down and then I can't urinate at all.

    Thoughts?

As most of the other ICers say, anytime you have a new symptom, make sure you test for a UTI, just incase.

But I've had the sensation you're talking about. Does it almost feel like a tickling or a tingling? SOOO annoying. One thing that helps me a little is very slow, deep breaths. I concentrate on relaxing that area as I breath.
Also, when mine is really bad, I have found that taking a sitz bath can help a little too.
    Sorry! Hope you feel better.<3

      Hi, thank you!

It's not really a tingling or tickling.... it's the muscle of the urethra actually spasming. Like a muscle tic that you sometimes get around your eye or elsewhere. I can feel my urethra, or something in that area, twitch or squeeze.

I used to get the same thing! But it stopped after I did pelvic floor physical therapy. It sounds like your pelvic floor is spasming around your urethra or something. I think you need to see a PT!
Update! Feeling much better these days and no longer on any meds!

Pelvic pain began July 2008. Urinary frequency began in November of 2008. IC Doctor says I'm one of the worst frequency patients he has had.

Things that helped me the most: IC Diet, Elavil (30mg), Elmiron since June '09 (500mg/day).

Previously tried and quit: one series of six instillations, Neurontin, Ditropan, Oxytrol, electric stimulation to the pelvic floor, Desert Harvest Aloe, Cystoprotek and Flomax, Hydroxyzine (50mg), Alesse Birth control (this helped my period flares when my symptoms used to be bad), PTNS (I think this helped).
