Same as any other addiction. Mind over matter. Having a good support system. Don't keep any in your house. Whenever you get a craving, replace it with something healthier that you know won't make you flare. Reward yourself for sticking to it.

Hey it just occurred to me that alot of people are ok with rootbeer, not diet, caffeine free. Might be worth trying.

I know its hard to give up a favorite beverage. I lived on diet pepsi through my 20's but totally gave up any soda about 15 years ago. It often gave me a stomach ache and bloated me anyways so I wanted to get rid of it.

I tried giving up coffee once and I did it. The withdrawal headache lasted about 3 days and was constant. I discovered I hated how I felt without some caffeine every day so now I only have it in the morning, half decaf, 2 cups and then I'm done for the day. I throw out the rest of the pot so I won't be tempted later in the day.

Some people can tolerate cocoa. I can't drink it everyday, but maybe twice a week I can handle a diet swiss miss with no problem. It has a little caffeine, less then pepsi but might be enough to keep the headache at bay.

You could try some very icy cold bottled water as a substitute.

SOMETHING GOOD ALWAYS COMES O SOMTHTING BAD MAYBE I WILL LOOSE A FEW UNWANTED POUNDS AND SOME ***PAIN***. I am drinking more water. Oh I love the Yoo hoo's so I might be drinking the little boxed yoohoo's and I will try the root beer. But I will try the no pop when my husband takes vacation so I can just have my Migriane and get it over with. I dread it. But with the help of the Lord we can accomplish anything. If it is in his will. Thank you all so much for the support. I love each of you.

Just really try to stick with the diet for a month, then add things back in slowly, one at a time. It's not so bad. A little root beer seems to be harmless, just make sure it's caffeine free, and there are actually all natural root beers out there. Expensive, but then it will keep you from drinking too much LOL! Yoo-Hoo, don't know about that, read the ingredients, it's pretty much filled with chemicals and preservatives. You have to knuckle down for a bit, get through it, everyone has pretty much been there. Look at carob as a sub for chocolate also, you can do anything with it. Be strong, you can do it. Oh I understand!!!

I think (fingers crossed) spring has sprung here in Texas. And when I was at the drug store the other day I saw, much to my delight, they had installed an Icee machine AT my Walgreens!!! I LIVE on Coke Icee's in the summer!! Last June I broke my leg and would BEG people to bring as big a Coke Icy as they could find!!! I had not been dx'd yet but was hobbling to the bathroom 20-30 times a day. I thought that was normal, lol.

Anyway, when I saw the Icee machine with my frozen addiction in it I didn't even think about IC. I just got the biggest cup they had. It wasn't until I was home and had that horrible familiar pain that I realized what I had done.

I went thru a little/maybe big grieving process when I threw the last of it down the drain and realized this is going to be a long, hot Texas summer with no Coke Icees. Needless to say I'm REALLY sad about this, but the pain was just not worth it.

Also, a tip on the headache from caffeine withdrawal. I quit coffee shortly after I was dx'd but I had also quit years ago for other reasons. When I started feeling the headache come on I would take half of an Excedrin migraine. I'm NOT saying that is a good med for IC, but it was just enough caffeine to keep me from the migraine and really it only took about 5-7 days before I didn't need it anymore.

I did not take it after I was dx'd so I would be very careful about trying it as a way to get thru the w/d. I'm just saying it helped me. I'm sure at the point I was taking it I had IC just not dx'd and not as aware as I am now of the correlation between what I drink and eat and my frequency and pain.

Good luck to you and I hope it goes well!!

                    Hooked on Excedrin Migraine?

I was never hooked on my half a pill. As a matter of fact, it seemed I just naturally stopped taking/needing it. I still feel and felt "not awake" without my coffee and caffiene. But after about a week I got used to it and didn't need the excedrin anymore. The first time I quit I had some very unusual circumstances thrown at me and I had to quit cold turkey except for the Excedrin.
This time I was able to sort of wean myself off with low acid half reg, half decaf then after about a week it was the same natural process where I went to complete low acid decaf and then to Roastaroma tea.
I know it's not the same thing as sodas, and I do still crave a coke (or coke Icee) a lot of the time. But at least I had a way to deal with the migraine. Good luck to you!! It's a hard habit to break. My saving grace when I quit the sodas once and for all was that I have 2 kids that would drink them all before I could get to them, lol. It's hard to drink them if they're not here!!!

Let us know how it goes!!

I agree. I gave up green tea and diet coke cold turkey! Nothing is worth the pain as far as I am concerned. however, 3.5 years in and I am still jealous anytime I see a diet coke can! Try rootbeer (usually mug and Barq are ok, must be caffeine free). I never drank it before, but occassionally if I am out I need something with flavor and it is quite yummy!
