  • Bladder pain, burning, frequency and blood in my urine

I have IC and it has been under control for a while until yesterday. I had this pain in my bladder I went to pee and it doubled me over from the burning and pain. I called my doctor and they got me right in. I dont think my bladder has ever hurt so bad. Anyway they took a urine sample and said I had quite a bit of blood in my urine and a little bit of infection. He gave me a tordal shot, cipro and pyridium. Well the pyridium helped. I have also been having pain around my kidney. I have a history of Kidney stones also. He said it is either cystitis or a kidney stone. My question is .. do you think it is just an ic flare? Or do you think it is something else causing my ic to flare? I am scared to get off the pyridium. THanks

Your doc can run tests to determine whether its a stone or both. You need to see him again if you don't feel better soon.

I agree --- if you don't feel better quickly, contact your doctor for advice. Blood in the urine can mean infection. You may also have passed a stone.

It sounds like you got the proper meds for what you went in for. However, you could definitely have gotten a CT scan for the kidney stone. I've had 4 and usually am x-rayed in the hospital. I got Toradol for the pain. I also usually have blood present in the urine. Though I've had blood present and have been told it "looked" like an infection. So better to be safe than sorry and ask for the x-ray to rule out the stone. And certainly have them check for a kidney infection if they didn't. Normally I don't get kidney pain with IC (only with a stone), though I do get much pain around the bladder area in in my stomach. I'm not sure about the pain in the kidney being related to IC. Perhaps someone else can share.

Do you have a fever or nausea?

I hope you get well soon!

Diagnosed: 2011 - have had symptoms for over 20 years. Diagnoses so far: Overactive Bladder, then IC, and now Myofacial Pelvic Pain Syndrome.

Medicines: For IC am doing PT, and will be taking Gabapentin, Ativan, Tramadol and Ambien. Ice packs and drinking vanilla shakes help. Foods that cause a flare, tomatoes, yogurt, coffee, soda, all sports drinks, and most teas. Take Verapamil, Naproxen (as needed), Omeprazole, Frova (as needed) and receive Botox shots(every three months) for migraines. For allergies I use Claritin and Flonase. (Feel free to ask me any questions about meds.)

Other conditions: Migraines, allergies, mild IBS.
