i was just wondering if there is anyone who thinks sex has caused their IC. i've never had problems with my bladder until i met my fiance who has "porno penis" and sex has caused me alot of pain. everything is normal with the pap but after a UTI my symptoms have never resided. i have been having frequency, urgency, bladder pain for 6 months and suspect IC and am going through the process of being diagnosed. i'm 20 and feel ya know like i'm 80.

    Hi Girl!!
How are ya??? I dont think sex causes IC, but I know that it can cause UTI's. Maybe you can try taking an antibiotic after sex, and that will clear up any bacteria, so you dont get an infection. Also using a condom can help not spread the UTI back and forth. And finally always try to use the bathroom BEFORE and AFTER sex, that also helps flush out any bacteria, and drink lots of water!! Hope this helps. Havent seen you on ICQ. Email me anytime if you have more questions. [email protected]
    Your Friend, ~~Amy
Diagnosed with IC in 1999. I believe due to chronic bladder infections and yeast infections, along with too many antibiotics. Mommy to , Angela Rose, 11-3-01 & Kaitlyn Nicole 3-23-04.

Amy's suggestions are great. I totally agree. There are many things you can do to prevent UTIs. Preventative antibiotics, showering (before and after if possible), lubricants, etc. If you BF uses his hand, ask him to make sure he washes his hands before activity.
Also, try experimenting with positions. Some positions are more likely to push bacteria into urethra.
I have a life long history of UTIs. As I got to be sexually active, UTIs became recurrent with sex. I think all these UTIs damaged my bladder and I got IC. So in a twisted way, I sorda did get IC because of sex. Does that make sense?
I'm 26 and feel like I'm 80 also. So I can definetly relate. Check out the sex and romance board for lots more suggestions.
      take care,

I TOTALLY hear you. I've been having pain with sex since I very first became sexually active. I guess I came to believe it was "normal" to be sore for days afterward, and I had no idea the rawness, itching and swelling that I had checked a million times for STD's had a NAME...I've suffered with vulvodynia for years. It has gotten progressively worse, no matter what I do. I just deal with it now, I guess. Now that I know IC and IBS and vulvodynia are a part of my life, I'll just keep on living like I was before, with a few changes.

I'm also in the same boat, I got UTIs after sex. First UTI 2 yrs ago total of 5 now and that's how I got IC after my UTI in November.
I was diagnosed very quickly so I guess I'm grateful for that. I knew I had to prevent UTIs after sex and I was following the "peeing after sex" to the T. Anyways I got a UTI 3 weeks ago and that made my IC symptoms even worse. I regret not having followed my dr's advice to take an antibiotic (macrodantin) after sex. I was trying to avoid yeast infection. Now I know and learned the hard way that I'll have to take an antibiotic after sex always. I don't like that but hey, what other options do I have, right?

For some reason once you get one UTI you are prompt to get several UTIs and that sucks. I've been getting them every 5-6 months since I got the first one.
I wonder if the bacteria is actually already in the bladder and just get agitated by sex...???
The thing mentioned about rough sex, I thought the same at one point too, so now no more rough sex for me.
Good luck and if anyone has more tips to avoid UTIs please please I wanna know!

            Me Too!

Count me in on this one! I had 10 (Yes, TEN!) uti, kidney, and bladder infections documented last year alone. My dr finally put me on a daily low dose antibiotic, (Macrobid 100mg once a day), in Feb of this year. Since then, I have only had one documented one, and one more suspected one. It really has helped. He also has me take an extra one after sex, just to be safe. As for the yeast infections, he said that Macrobid, (especially at this dose) doesnt generally cause them. However, I have had a few, but not as many as you would think. But, he has given me a standing prescription of Diflucan to fill when needed. Most of the time I just use the Monistat, unless it is particularly stubborn.

I always got the UTIs prior to being sexually active, however, I have gotten them much worse since then. Prior to being sexually active, I would get about 3 UTIs a year, but that jumped to 8-10 when I started having sex. I hate that!! Gives new meaning to "the price of love", huh??!!

Anyway, I would definately tell your dr that sex causes you to flare and ask about daily Macrobid, or at least if you can take it after sex. One other thing that might help is something called UrimarT. It is a prescription I take that is similar to Pyridium, except it has something in it that helps with burning on urination that turns pee blue, and has a mild antispasmodic, as well as an antibacterial agent in it, and a couple of other things. It is an awesome med!! It can be taken 4 times a day. They probobly have samples of this one too.

Hope all this helps you! I hope you find a solution to your problems. I will be interested to see what helps others who experiance this. Hugs, Amy

I don't think rough sex causes IC but I do think it can increase the risk. Normal sex is hard on the pelvic muscles so I would think rough sex even harder....and once they are tense it is extra pressure on that bladder. Than there are infections which definatly can dammage the bladder lining.

One other thing that can increase the risk for infections from sex is that if PFD is flaring it may cause some retention.....and the longer that urine is stuck in there the more risk to infection!

I really think that people with IC should try to avoid UTIs as much as possible.
When I had my first UTI after having IC I could tell how much that damaged my bladder and made my symptoms worse, I'm still in pain becasue of that.
Even more than food or anything... I had UTis before and they were nothing compared to the one after IC. I think doing the IC diet, taking a good medication is great and I do that but the number 1 thing I watch now is preventing UTIs and I knwo that even when people do everything to prevent still get them.
Another thing is that I wonder if the people that get UTIs is really b/c a bacteria from outside got inside the bladder during sex.....or was the bacteria already there??? I'm seeing my urologist tomorrow. I don't know why but I think the problem with the infection is more inside than a bacteria getting inside. I'll talk to her about this and see what she says.
