  • What causes IC??

I wonder if being hurt causes IC. It's a touchy subject..but what about being hurt when you were very young, sexually? My therapist ( she treats me for IC pain and how to cope w/pain) thinks this could very well be the cause...and my urologist told me 80% of her PT's have been sexually abused as children. I'm not going into this subject, but I think it's possible.
When I frst let my self know consciously..I started having symptoms..it took years to find out the truth about it being IC. but it was a relief to know what it was, the diagnosis I mean. I knew it was real, a real disease. I wonder how many people have been hurt that have IC..consider it is the bodys way or protecting us. It would be one serious message..we'd all like to see it go away, but your thoughts would be appreciated, There are so many things that could have caused this.the IC..it's important to know we didn't cause it. I was never abused either. I commented on another post that I had read that many people who are abused have urinary and intestinal problems- as an effect, as a reaction, due to physical or mental damage. If you think that's you, then go through therapy. I think it could only help. If not w/ IC, then w/ dealing with IC. I tried the therapy route, but the dr was so convinced that my physical pain could not possibly be "real" and that I must be repressing some horrible abuse. Who wants a dr who already has his mind made up. Not me.

      Good Luck

I was not abused as a child. Had one incident as an 18 year old, but not complete rape. I had dealt with it in therapy long before my IC symptoms started.

        Diagnosed August 2001

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

I was never abused either. I think that this is another myth. These are probably the same drs. who have tried to make woman feel that somehow they are to blame for their IC, that it is all psychological. We'll never get to the cause & cure if we let them keep perpetuating this belief!
I hope I haven't offended anyone who was abused as a child, and carries that around with them for life. grouphug

Thanks for responding, I didn't think abuse caused IC either, but it could go along the lines that some damage that is physical, whether surgery, an error, a catheter, a disease we don't know about yet.. etc can cause it.I didn't mean sexual abuse, by the way..there are all kind of physical abuse.Glad none of you were hurt. There are great therapist out there for helping with pain. Pain changes our life, it changes everything, but it wakes us up to examine our life too. so, in this pain I find some good, even on a bad day when it's stretch.I look inside and examine. Sanctuary

I was never abused as a child. Had alot of problems with my periods and urinary tract infections as I turned 18. Some I think it is heriedartary. My youngest sister has bladder infections like I do chronically. I think she may have Ic too. Hope you are all doing well.
Hang in there , There is hope.

I was never abused as a child, but developed IC after a very severe UTI. I don't think the UTI caused the IC, but I do think it triggered it. I will be very surprised if IC isn't at least partly genetic in origin.

I will answer this response from a different angle. I am a therapist who has worked with many women and men who experienced childhood sexual and/or physical trauma. None of them has ever had ic.

I think that if someone has a sexual abuse history and ic, that it is most likely a sad coincidence.

                  Be well, be strong,
                  Hope grouphug

I've also never been abused as a child. Actually my urologist told me I was born with this. Some kind of birth defect. To me this makes sense.
The only thing I don't understand is somewhere along the line we've all had our IC triggered in different ways. Hopefully with the ongoing research out there, someone will finally tell us how this happened and come up with a cure......soon, I hope.

I was never abused as a child either. I had shingles in 1997 and my health was 100% before that. After that I had recurring UTI's and serious depression, one health problem after another. I have been to numerous doctors for several years now and was directed to the best working for a group of doctors myself. I have seen more doctors in the past 6 years than most do in a lifetime. I so look forward to knowing and understanding this new disease for me. I am glad to FINALLY have an answer but now adjusting to it is the next step. Rae
