  • Help for Uninsured if Low Income

    Hello All:

I just got my bill today from an office visit with a surgeon that I got a second opinion from.

I lost my job after having surgery back in November. Not only did I lose my job, I lost my insurance. My husband got injured at work, so he lost health insurance too. We actually make too much to qualify for state insurance. (We are on unemployment and workmans comp). We have a dependent, also. go figure.

Anyway. My husband called around, and actually found a program that our local hospital and health providers offers for people with low income. Your bill is based on your income. We had to switch all of our doctors and hospital, but it is sooo worth it!!

Back to the bill: the surgeon charged $402.74, the discount we received is 385.34! Our bill is $17.40. Again, this is for an office visit, new patient.

I just wanted to share this information with my fellow IC friends who might be in a similar situation.

My husband also called around to all the pharmacies in our area and found a discount program for free. We get a substantial discount on our meds at our grocery store pharmacy. Sometimes we pay less than we did when we paid insurance co pays! (It's not just for low income, it's for anyone! They just ask for your name and address)

So please, call around! There is help out there!
I hope I made a difference in someone's life today.
