    So I emailed my hr person requesting a medical leave & she said she'd process it for me but she wants me to call her cause she has some questions for me. Any idea what she'll be asking me or what I'm obligated to tell her?

    Great question. Basically, I don't believe they are entitled to any personal information that would violate HIPAA and your privacy. So, my understanding is that all they can ask is if you need leave and if you have a doctors note. Sometimes these calls can be to try to mine you for information.. so I would keep it very simple.

    I was looking for a good article on the web for you but it's late and I have to go to bed. You might want to cruise the web for "tips on how to request sick leave" and see if you can find any suggestions there!

      Many companies have a documented sick leave policy. The company where I worked sure did. If your company has one, I'd make sure I read through it to see what it lists for rules and requirements.

        If you have a written statement from your physician, it's my understanding that they cannot ask for diagnostic information. I believe this came about to protect the privacy of HIV patients, but it also extends to others.

        I suggest you do as Jill suggested --- do some research so you know your rights. There may be differences in regulations if there are less than fifty employees so you might want to check that as well.
