  • Short Term Disability exhausted, now what?

So the time has come, my SDI has run out and I still can't work. Can I apply for permanent disability? I'm only 30...how did my life get to this point, unbelievable. Anyhow if I were to get permanent disability and let's say in a year I miraculously recover somehow, can my case be reevaluated and then I can work again? I'm not sure how this works, but I need money and I have zero income so not sure what else to do.

    Anyone? Anyone?

I suggest you file for permanent disability. And when you improve to the point you can work again, the disability payments would be discontinued. When an individual is on disability, there are periodic reviews when they look at your health again --- and if there's significant improvement so you aren't still qualified, that would just be good news.

The important thing right now is that if you can't work, you need to apply right away; the fact that you've been on a disability program might help with your approval, but it can still take some time.

    Warm hugs,
    Donna

      Hi Donna,

I spoke to my doctor today and he refuses to sign off for the disability. I said I have no income, how can I afford to keep paying for medical treatments, medication, health insurance etc without income? He said when ppl go on disability they rarely ever improve and never get off of it. He doesn't want to approve a 30 year old woman disability. I explained to him that I do not WANT to go on disability at this age (like who does!?) but I need help until I get to the point where i feel good enough to go back to work. Am I supposed to force myself to work? Has anyone experienced this before? I'm about ready to switch doctors, he doesn't understand. I'm so frustrated right now I can't even think straight.

He did. But since it's considered Permanent Didability he doesn't want to. I explained that I don't want to be permanently disabled and as soon as I felt good enough to work again I would. He still wouldn't approve it. I'm furious as is my family. I guess doctors expect us to go into debt cuz of our illness.

I think under the circumstances, I might at least consider seeing a different physician for a second opinion.

Re: Short Term Disability exhausted, now what?

              A. You are lucky to get STD. We do not have it in my state.
              B. You should have applied for SSI while on STD to make your case. Also because it takes months for them to accept or reject. Then add on more months if you want to appeal.
              C. Get a new doctor.
              D. It is not permanent forever. If you are feeling better in say a year or more, you can start applying for jobs. SSI will not immediately stop. I think they keep paying you for at least 6 months to a year.

Re: Short Term Disability exhausted, now what?

You can contact an atty that deals with state and or social security disability for a consult. They would be able to tell you if it's possible to pursue your case.
