  • Michaeleen Franklin, Tucson AZ SGL, has died in a plane crash

I am absolutely devastated to share that Michaeleen ("Mike") Franklin, her husband Jim and a niece passed away tragically last week in a plane crash in Arizona. Their private plane was attempting to land at Sedona Airport and was on final approach when it suddenly crashed into a cliff. The Sedona airport is one of the most legendary in the USA for its beauty and its trickiness. It lies above the city on a large mesa and is surrounded by steep cliffs. Their funeral is this Monday morning at 9:30 AM in Tucson.

Mike was a friend. She was a colleague. She was an inspiration and the embodiment of an IC legend. Why?? She WAS, undeniably, the longest running IC support group leader in the USA, having started her group in the early 1980's. I can think of noone else in the country with that level of consistency and determination. She cared about patients and she kept her group running (with the help of many others over the years) to serve patients in Arizona. There were periods when her group was the only IC support group in the Southwest.

I liked her because she was honest with me. I could call her and ask for her opinion and she'd give it to me straight out. I respected her work. I respected her insight into the needs of IC patients. I admired her compassion and dedication. What a woman... What a hero.... A true IC Angel!

We will be looking for a special way to honor Mike in the future... and for those of you who knew her personally, would appreciate any insight you mmight have to offer on how we can do this. We will, of course, try to help keep her legacy alive in Arizona as well.

Please share your thoughts and condolences here!

    Jill

          How Awful

Oh what horrible news to wake up to. I am sure she will be remembered by all those in her support group as someone who was unselfish enough to share her illness and coping strategies with everyone. So sorry for you Jill

This is so tragic. I am so sorry that we have lost such a great woman, her husband and her niece. (((Hugs))) on their way to you, Jill and for the family who are left behind.

Jill...You asked for suggestions as to how to honor her. How about dedicating the "Interstitial Cystitis Support Group List-USA & Canada" Board on the "Meet Others by Region (USA) Forum to her?

That is so awful! I feel so terrible for their loved ones. I would like to send my condolences to their families, friends, and to you for the loss of your dear friend. I also send my condolences to those in her support group. The IC Community has truly lost a wonderful, compassionate friend.

I think Sharon's suggestion is a wonderful idea. Since Michaeleen was so committed to supporting other IC patients, I think that would be a meaningful way to honor her.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, their family and all those who loved them.

                      Sending hugs,
                      Amy
