  • Note of caution

If you should receive an email from your credit card company indicating possible fraud, do not use the telephone number on the email to check on it. But do call the number listed on the back of your card or on your statement.

I received just such an email this morning --- at first I thought it was just another spam and almost simply deleted it --- then I thought again and decided to call the number on my card. What I found out is that someone had a heyday with my account number yesterday and there was indeed a fraud alert on my account. Fortunately we were able to clear the charges and I will be receiving a new card very quickly.

I'm so very glad I decided to make that call; the almost $3,000 charged to the card yesterday could easily have increased if I hadn't

And if the email turns out to be a spam, all you've wasted is a few minutes.

Was the email alert indeed from your credit card company? Yes I would always call the number on the back of the card but I wonder if they do send us an alert should something seems funky. I'm somewhat weird in as much as I check my own bank account plus credit card each day. So happy you got to the problem quickly! Hug, Ziggy

The email alert was from the credit card company. I thought it was very strange, so I chose to use the number on my card instead of the one in the email. I'm so very glad I made that call.

Thanks Donna. something simular happened to us a few weeks ago. My husband accidently left his atm card in the machine, as soon as he returned home he went straight to the bank and cancelled it out and the bank ordered a new one.

Within a week we had changes on our bank acct that didn't come from us. We called the bank and the charges stimmed from his new card that had not been activated yet!

the bank closed that card at as well and took the charges off our acct. But my question to the bank was how did that happen?? My husband hadn't even actvated it yet and it has to be activated from your home phone??

the lady at the bank didn't have any answers and we are still puzzled.

So everyone watch your bank acct very carefully.

          hugs and blessings
          MARY

They will be sending me a new card with a new number on it; the card isn't through my bank, but I've been checking my bank account balance every morning and evening to be sure. I think someone must have got the credit card number through an internet order. I plan to purchase a prepaid card with something like $200 on it strictly to use for internet orders.

Thanks so much for the info Donna. We had a similar incident but I received notification on my cell phone via text message (I don't text by the way so I thought it might be fraudulent). I, like you, called the number on the back of my card instead and sure enough, someone had used our card in a manner we never have, so it was flagged. They closed the account, removed the charges and we are extremely cautious.

I love your idea about the prepaid card for internet purchases!!!! This year because of my health, I've entered the world of internet shopping and you've just made that so much safer for many of us that aren't aware of the risks......

              Thank you again, Donna

So sorry this happened to you Donna. It makes you feel violated! I was also victim to unauthorized CC charges to my card last year after coincidentally having placed an online order.

Anyway, I have a card I use for internet purchases that has an extremely low limit. -And does not allow going beyond. There are very few companies online where I'll use my CC with a high credit limit.

Sometimes it's seems like we're becoming a world of scammers!

                  Donna,
Thanks so much for telling us about your Credit Card.
I think getting a prepaid card for Internet purchases is a great idea and will follow up on that.
Sorry you had to go through all that hassle.

We have had this happen to us twice now. The first time was also on a card we had not even activated from our bank. I guess someone inside the bank may have been selling these card numbers (who knows). The purchase was made in Turkey and no one in our family has ever been to Turkey.

A few weeks ago my credit card company called me at home and said they were concerned because someone had made a one cent purchase on my credit card. The lady said this is how hackers often start off - using small amounts before making large purchases. I called my husband and daughter (who is on our account for college puchases) to see if they had made the charge. Both my daughter and husband said no and to call and cancel the cards. So, this is what I did. I then signed up (for free) for fraud alert where someone from my credit card company would call me to alert me if there were odd charges made to my account.

I do think the pre-paid credit card is a great idea for on-line purchases. I think I'm going to do this - thanks, Donna!

My goodness this sounds very upsetting! I read somewhere that a safe site such as a store will have HTTPS:// before the name. It is suppose to scramble our transactions so others can't get our information. Like everything else, I'm sure the bad guys can get around anything if they try hard enough. Stealing ones ID should carry a stiff sentence the same as rape. The violation is extreme and terrible upsetting! Credit cards are touched by many hands before they reach a bank so the bank may not be responsible. I worked as an Auditor in a bank for many years and can assure you there will be a very large investication about the unactivated credit cards. Hugs, Ziggy
