  • Another Neurontin question

Doc gave me 100mg 2 times per day. I took it for one week and was so doped up I stopped. I went through two red lights and couldn't remember my credit card PIN number only on 100 mgs!!! The nurse told me I needed to give it two weeks before I made a decision. Anyone else have this issue to where they just couldn't take it and had to stop? I'm scared to try it again.

My suggestion is to talk with your doctor. The nurse may not have realized how significant your reaction was. And definitely don't drive when you're feeling so out of it.

    Sending warm hugs,
    Donna

Thanks Donna . I called the nurse the last time I took it, and she told me to take it another week . I went back on it last night. Didn't do a thing for me and I got up to pee 5 times. I am going to let it run it's 2 week course though because my doc gets irradiated with me as if I wasn't trying to get better. I hate being a complainer every time I go. I never have good news to report.

I had similar experiences when I first started Neurontin. I had to build up the dose slowly. The episodes of forgetting/fogginess gradually stopped. Giving it 2 weeks before reevaluating sounds like a good idea.

          Amanda,

Wowie...your up to 900mg? How do you feel on it? Thanks for letting me know on that. I also have the valium but was afraid to take it with the Nurontin? How does the combination work for you? Are you able to work on this regimen or are you tired during the day?

I'm confused. I thought Neurontin was for nerve pain, not bladder pain. I have IC and have done well on Elmiron for over twelve years. Early this year I began having what I thought was a flare but turns out I've developed Pudendal Neuralgia. The doctor has discussed my taking Lyrica or Neurontin for the nerve pain. For now I'm in a study at UCI and am getting once a week nerve block injections for six weeks. Have only had three but so far am no better. The only thing that has helped in this seven months of pain is Lorazapam. I take it at bedtime and it allows me to sleep through the night without waking up with urgency and pain. If anyone else out there is on Lyrica or Neurontin and it is helping I would like to hear from you. Thanks and good luck!

I take neurontin more for vulvar vestibulitis since it's more nerve-related. I don't want to be on it forever, but for now it helps. Fortunately I don't usually have bladder pain, only urgency and frequency.

              Susan, I answered your PM.

                Lyrica and Neurontin (gabapentin)

Lyrica and Neurontin both block nerve pain. It doesn't really matter where the pain is or why you are having the pain. They block the pain going from the bladder up the nerve to your brain, where you feel the pain. Both of these medication take weeks- think 6 weeks- to work. Some people are initially very groggy on these medications. I would start with 100mg at bedtime and increase as your body starts to tolerate the medication. These are both great medications for blocking pain- so start slow and be patient!

                    heartburn with Lyrica

You have several options. You may want to try ranitidine (Zantac). You can take 300mg at night. There is some mouse research that shows it may also help block IC pain and will also help the heartburn (double wammy!). If this doesn't work, either Nexium or omeprazole 20mg- which you can get over the counter would be OK
