It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Daniel Brookoff on April 13, 2011. With his rich southern accent, bright smile and always encouraging words, Dan offered hope and solace to the most desperately ill IC patients who flew from around the country to his clinics to receive pain care.
Dan was a maverick. When others didn’t believe that IC pain should be treated, he was one of the first to try to help, often facing criticism from medical administrators who complained that his clinic was not profitable.
Dan was a visionary. He explored new methods of pain relief and care, from the use of various pain medications to new medical devices that could offer relief.
Dan was an IC advocate. He travelled to conferences around the country to educate and train medical professionals about IC and the need for the compassionate care of pelvic pain patients.
Dan was a friend of mine. Back in 1994 when others didn’t believe in the ICN, Dan flew across the country to California to appear at our first medical conference where he helped us promote and eventually pass the California Pain Patients Bill of Rights.
Dan was a husband and a father to two daughters. He was, undeniably, a good man who tried to help as many patients as he could. And that he did! The kindness in his heart and generosity of his spirit and soul touched thousands of lives and we are forever grateful. May he rest in piece.
Dan is survived by his wife and two daughters. Services will be held on Monday, April 18, 10:30 am at the Temple Israel Cemetery, Levy-Cooper Chapel. The family has established a fund for an ICA Dan Brookoff Memorial Pain Management Forum in memory of the important work he did. Donations can be made at www.ichelp.org/DanBrookoffMemorial or mailed to: ICA, 100 Park Avenue, Suite 108A, Rockville, MD 20850.
