  • An Unexpected Honor

I am positively thrilled to share that I've been selected to serve as a Consumer Reviewer on Interstitial Cystitis Panel within the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) and the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). They contacted me in early July and asked if I would like to participate. After an extensive application process, I was selected and am serving with several key IC researchers on this critical committee.

What does this mean? I've been asked to screen about a dozen potential new studies that may or may not be funded by the Department of Defense. Each year, about $50 million dollars is allocated to the DoD for the pursuit of research studies that are applicable to military personnel. In addition to what you would assume they would study, such as head trauma and injury, interstitial cystitis is also one of their critical study areas.

I'm asked to share the perspective of the patient community, commenting not only on the scientific aspects of a proposed study but also the general relevance of a study. In otherwords, which studies will most closely address the needs of patients and/or the patient community.

Confidentiality is a must and I'm not allowed to disclose any of the information that I'm reviewing. What I can tell you is that the applications are in-depth, educational and proof, in my mind, that IC researchers are thinking "outside of the box" as they try to develop new treatments, etc. etc. It's quite exciting!

It's a pleasure to be working with a military project. I was selected as a Presidential Management Fellow (Intern) when I finished graduate school and had job offers from every branch of the military. I consider it an honor to work not only on behalf of IC patients but also those bravely serving overseas today.
