hi ladies: I think that maybe the ibuprofen I took for menstrual cramping is causing a flare--a miserable day today. Does anyone know what else to take? thanks, kathy

Kathy,
A lot of us have problems taking ibuprofen. Sometimes it bothers my bladder, sometimes it doesn't. As long as I take prelief with it, it doesn't bother my bladder. The only other thing I can suggest that you take is tylenol. I don't that that bothers most people.
The one time it caused me a flare I had intense burning that started about an hour after I took it, I knew it was the ibuprofen because it was the only thing I had eaten/taken that would have caused that horrible burning! Hope you feel better soon.Christine
I have been diagnoised for 6 1/2 years now. I have taken a long break from the ICN but really miss helping out my fellow IC patients and want to get back into posting.
1st hydro 4/07 showed no visible signs of IC but tons of mast cells in all my biopsy samples which did prove IC.
2nd hydro 4/13/09 showed dark purple glomerulations and I had a capacity of 450 cc's. This hydro proved that my IC had progressed.
I have tried every oral medication as well as rescue instills and DMSO.
I have been lucky enough to see Dr Hanno, the top IC specialist in PA who has told me due to the fact that I have not responded to any "standard" treatments that I have a severe, end stage case of IC with a horrible quality of life (didn't have to tell me that last part!)

Hi Kathy,
Christine had some great advice - try taking 2 prelief pills with the ibuprofen. Everybody responds differently to over the counter anti-inflammatories, so be careful. I once went into a 2 week flare from taking Aleve! YICK!!!
Take care and feel GOOD!
BETHIC diagnosis 1999
Meds: Elmiron
hydroxyzine hcl
DMSO as needed
valium as needed
librax 3x day
TENS therapy
Thanks to all on the boards - YOU have helped more than I can say!

cramps
My favorite new thing are ThermaCare heatwraps. I bought like 9 boxes off eBay for $20. That's 27 wraps! They work soooo good. The box says they work for 8 hours. All of mine have lasted at least ten but really more like 12 hours! I normally use mine for bladder pain but they work great for menstrual cramps---which is what they were designed for. They feel really good.Lee Ann
Current Rx Meds:
Atarax, Ditropan, Elmiron
Prior to pregnancy: The above 3 meds PLUS Neurontin, Topamax, Loratadine, continuous OrthoCyclen, Lidocaine Patches PRN, Temazepam PRN, & Vicodin PRN
Hooray for babies!
Misc. lifesavers: Hot baths, ThermaCare Heat Wraps, Ice Packs. The IC Diet has changed my life.
Didn't work for me:
Detrol LA, Amitryptiline, Morphine, Percocet, TENS unit, Interferential Pain Stimulator Unit, Hypogastric Plexus Nerve Block
IC (Mod-Severe) since 1996
UPDATE: 5/21/08 Pregnancy and breastfeeding afterwards have alleviated my IC symptoms more than anything, EVER. Most days are 100% pain free & I now have normal frequency (as long as I take these 3 meds).
