  • Can yeast infection cause flare?

Last Tuesday I woke up with the beginnings of a yeast infection. I called in for two Diflucan. I took one right away that Tue and then another two days later. I felt pretty much over it by that Friday. I noticed that by Sunday I was having some discomfort and some more frequent urge to urinate. Yeasterday I was fine at work, but then was having frequency and pressure in the afternoon. Felt better by bedtime, only got up once during the night (the usual) and was fine during work today. I only went three times in six hours (also normal for me). However, as the afternoon has progressed I am getting worse and worse, lots of pressure and feel like I need to go again about 5 min after voiding. Could this be a delayed reaction to the yeast treatment? I'm finishing my dinner and then going to CVS to get test strips to make sure I don't have a UTI. I took an AZO to try and help with the frequency but all it did was dull the slight urethral discomfort I had. I still have all the pressure and I seem a little bloated. I'm trying to stay hydrated, but I really am getting sick of running to the bathroom

Well, I am feeling a little better today. I took the day off from work to go see my doctor though because when I did the home UTI test it came back very high in leukocytes but the nitrates were low. Either way I figured it would be safer to see the doctor.

What did your doc say about the white blood cells? I swear I feel so much worse when they are present, just like you.

So I don't know what to do now. The test at the doctor's came back negative for a UTI, but she prescribed me three days of Cipro "just in case". My only concern now is that antibiotics are going to give me another yeast infection and I'll be back at square one. I'm filling the Cipro presciption, but I'm on the fence about taking them. I'm feeling a little better today, although I am still feeling the need to go about every hour. I also got the name of a different Uro than the one I had used in the past, so I plan on making an appointment with her.

You might already be doing this but take additional quantities of a probiotic. I double up and take primadophilis reuteri (a blend, you can get it online or vitamin shoppe sells it). The reuteri blend has been proven in studies to help with vaginal yeast. I have NEVER had a yeast infection while taking an antibiotic and this particular blend......knock on wood

Personally I'm not comfortable taking a wide spectrum antibiotic for a UTI unless I am absolutely certain that I have one, especially because I am very prone to yeast when I take such a strong antibiotic. Since you're feeling a little better, you might call the doctor and ask if you can put off the antibiotics for now, especially since you are just recovering from a yeast infection.
Also, the yeast infection you just got over may have left some irritation in it's wake. I know even when a yeast infection has cleared up it takes me a couple of weeks til I feel back to normal down there.
                Hope you feel better

It's very possible to be in the beginning of an infection and not have it show up on a dipstick. Did your doctor order a culture? It's been years since I had a UTI, but my uro did prescribe a wide spectrum antibiotic for me while we waited for culture results. It turned out that I did have infection --- and the cipro was the antibiotic that was deemed to be most appropriate per culture results.

My doctor did send the urine sample out. She said we should have the results by next week. I'm taking the antibiotic. I have tons of frequency today. The pain isn't as bad today, but I'm still taking the AZO. I have been running to the bathroom every 40 min. I get frustrated because I want to drink lots of water, but when I do I have to run to the bathroom constantly. I tried drinking a little bit all day, but that didn't stop the frequency. I called the number of the uro I got, but I just got a message that they are not there today. It must be a small office.

So I just wanted to update that the urologist said it sounded like Ic ....but she did not think there was a link between the flare and yeast (can't say I agree). So I had ended up taking the antibiotic Over that weekend bc I was afraid it was an infection, but when I finally got the results of the urinalysis back days later (so annoying) sure enough it was clear. Stupid on my part. So since then I have been having mild to moderate yeast symptoms, I'm going to the gyno on we'd. About a year and a half ago I was having a lot of yeast issues and bladder sensitivity and was put on a 8 week regimen of one diflucan a week for eight weeks. that did wonders for me. I'm seeing a different dr this time but I am hoping she will A. Acknowlege that yeast and my bladder are not friends and B. take me seriously when I explain that I don't always have heavy discharge when I am having yeast issues. I feel like when I just take two diflucan it quiets the yeast for a bit but it doesn't knock it out. I still have a irritation in that whole general area. I know that my yeast issues are not just vaginal. They are from years of waaaaay too much sugar and bad foods and way too many rounds of antibiotics. throw in mono a few years ago and the yeast just had a ball. I think the reason the 8 week treatment worked was because it gave me time to build back up the good bacteria by taking probiotics.Think about it, how much sense does taking two pills over two days make when you think about how long it takes to repopulate the good bacteria. The yeast will take back over way faster than you can build the good stuff back up.
