  • Admitted to Hospital

Hi everyone....my flare started last wednesday....by Friday it was so bad that I had to go to the ER and they admitted me to the hospital. It's monday and I'm still here. I'm getting fluids, and dilaudid every 3 hours. It helps with the pain. I went to the ER because I couldn't control the pain at home with percocet and valium suppositories. Now I'm wondering when its OK to go home. By doctor kind of left it up to me as to when I'd be discharged. I really wanna go home but I want to make sure that its under control before I do so I don't end up back in the ER. I'm just not sure how to decide when I'm ready. Any suggestions?
I am happy to say that I am off all pain medication and currently take Neurontin and Uribel for my IC. I went to the Cleveland Clinic Chronic Pain Rehabilitation program and it saved my life!! I still get bad flare ups but it turns out I was on so many narcotics it was making my pain worse.

I really really feel for you! I am sorry that you are in the hospital. Will they give you any meds to go home with besides the ones you have already at home like percocet? Hang in there.. What caused your flare?

      Oh no!!!

I was wondering where you were!!! I'm SO sorry!! I know it's tempting to just say "I wanna go home" because I've done it and if it was too soon, I landed right back in the hospital (one time in the SAME room!!). If they will do it, and you are hydrated enough, maybe you should get off the IV meds and try a different med that you would be able to take at home. Then see how you do while you're still there. If it doesn't work then they will be there to help you. I'm so sorry sweetie, I hope you're feeling well enough soon to go home. I know how bad the hospital sucks!! And I DO think you need to move to a stronger med if the percocet and VV wasn't enough. Let us know know how you're doing and I'm thinking about you.
Also, if you can tolerate dilaudid, that is available in tablet form. I've been having good luck with oxycontin, although it was increased and is currently kicking my butt. Surely you will be able to find something that will help you. But I do believe you need to do a "trial run" while you're still where people can care for you if needed.
I'm thinking of you and sending you hugs and my best and highest hopes!!

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm waiting on my nurse to come in and i'm going to talk to her about it. I tolerate dilaudid very well....it doesn't even really make my stomach upset. My doctor told me that it comes in a tablet form but its not as effective. He came in to see me this morning at 5:30 but i was hardly awake. I don't want to go home too soon either.....but ur right I do hate the hospital. And I tend to just wanna leave as soon as my pain gets under control. But I would hate to get home and be right back in the same position. I'll let u know how things go....thanks again!

Well I talked to the nurse and they wanna keep me another night....I'm kinda bummed but at least i know when i'm in here my pain is under control. I'm gonna ask them if they will stop the IV fluids at night. I think its why I'm having a hard time sleeping through the night bc i wake up to pee from all the fluids, then i'm in pain, then i have to wait for the nurse to come in and give me the pain meds. But hopefully i will be home tomorrow in my own bed. And to answer a question that was asked earlier, I think this flare was stress related. I have some family issues going on right now....they don't include me but i worry and stress about it and then my bladder worries and stresses and then....here i am. anyways thanks for the replies.

I'm sorry you have to stay, but I'm kinda glad, too. You'll be taken care of, for sure. So that part's good. I know what you mean about the IV, I would feel like I JUST got back in bed and I'd have to go pee AGAIN!! I pee enough as it is, I don't need the help of an IV that's pouring it in like a water hose!! Just make sure you drink enough and hopefully they'll take it out. Plus then, you can be FREE and go to the bathroom alone (no IV pole, which is just a pain in the rear to drag around!!)!! Again, I'm so sorry you're there honey, and hopefully this time tomorrow you'll be in you own cozy bed with your heating pad and jammies and some pain meds that really work!! Let us know how you're doing, I check the board all the time so I'll be checking in on you!!!

I hope you've been able to get the pain under control Erica. Hospitals stink, but so does a flare. Praying that you've been able to leave both behind!

So sorry Erica you went through it yet again. You are a brave young woman in dealing with this thing, and hope you feel better real soon. Do you attribute your flare to anything other than the stress? It's a bummer for sure to have family issues that you can do nothing about. Try to not think about it and let things play themselves out, sometimes it just works without you getting involved. Take care girl, and take it easy for a few days. Heal. Jill, wife of Bob

Thanks Jill, although sometimes I don't feel so brave ( like when i broke down cryingin the ER when they told me they were admitting me) But anyways, stress is the only thing I can think of that has caused this flare. We have a very close family so it's hard to distance myself but i'm trying. Its just one sister causing the problems so I still have the rest of my family to turn to for support. I'm also in therapy which has been helping but I've missed 2 appointments from being in the hospital so I think I just need some therapy time to work it all out. thanks for your kind words, Erica
