  • Naproxen 500mg causing flare!

My spine doc prescribed Naproxen 500mg for arthritis in my spine and(two bulging discs with tears). I am flaring big time! The bladder and urine burning is at a level 10! I wouldn't have taken this if I knew this would happen! People beware...just in case you have a reaction from it(I understand that we all won't have a bad reaction)!

    Naproxen

I also took naproxen for knee pain. I also flared from it combined with other things like rasberry seltzer. I know naproxen is used for inflammation, so why does it cause inflammation to the bladder. Anybody have any theories or answerrs?

    Thanks

I have a prescription for it but not suppose to take it on a continuous basis due to taking blood thinners; so I will take it every once in awhile when I'm having really bad pain (for bladder or whatever) I will take it and it will be gone for a few hours.

Oh no Teela! I'm sorry I've heard the NSAIDS can aggravate some IC bladders. Thankfully I haven't had a problem with that. I, too, was recently prescribed Naproxen 750 mg for my back pain, and I'm actually feeling some relief after many months of so much pain the we have talked about. I'd say I'm 50% better than a month ago! I hope your bladder calms down and that you soon find something to help your back. Good luck.

            Hi Bri,
I'm so glad that you're getting some relief from your back pain! Actually I am too, since the doc wrote me a script for Cymbalta. He wanted me to take the Naproxen for 2 weeks but I couldn't...it caused my bladder to burn and my frequency and urgency shot through the roof! I flared for 3 days from taking the Naproxen. I have another appointment in 2 weeks. I'm glad that the Naproxen is helping you!

Unfortunatly a lot of people with IC can not take NSAIDS, or nonsteriods anti inflamitories.

They have so many kinds and names, google any new pain me meds to see if it is in this class of meds

Examples are advil, aleve, naproxen, Ibprophine, asprin, and many more. These are all OTC.

There is also lots of rx ones, lots of a little bit different in some way.

I took one a years ago, for back issues, it worked, it also made my bladder worse but I had no idea what bladder problems I had then, anyways it got taken off the market and as soon as I stopped it it set off a really long and bad migraine.

I do take Ponstan or Ponstel USA name, It does not bother my bladder, I take it 4x's a day, it is a NSAID, I am told it has a different chemical make up from other NSAIDS. Last year they had a manufacturers shortage. I tried a few of the other rx's one but all bothered my bladder, right away.

Ponstel is basicly used for pelvic pain. I think an older type med, as it is not long acting and most of the newest ones are once a day.

It's real name is metfemic acid don't let the name scare you off, it really does help my bladder and my back.

I thought that it didn't actually do much for me until I could not get it for 6 mos last year. My pain increase significantly.

I do remember when I first started taking it my Dr. said you will need to take it reg for 3 weeks to get the full effect, not that taking one doesn't help but it helps more once it builds up in your system and reduces some of the inflamation.

I hope this flare ends soon, it depends on if it was a 4-6 hour med or a 24hr med, depending on how long acting it is depends on how long it takes to get out of your system, and then of course for your bladder to settle down from it.

Wishing you well. I hope your flare ends soon. I know it can be so frustrating navigating all theses meds etc.

Just remember all meds effect people differently, and you need an rx for it so you will have to discuss it with your Dr. first. But I hope if you decided to give it a try that it helps you too.

I have Crohn's and had flare from NSAID yrs ago. It affects prostaglandins which can affect Crohn's. Wonder if similar effect with i.c.

Good question? But I don't know the answer.
