Can ab work out cause flare/pain???

    Sorry for your pain. I understand the Ab workout creating flares. I am a brass player - I play horn. Since struggling with this disease, I haven't been able to play brass music - because of breathing and supporting the air from my lower abdomen. I was doing much better so I decided to play at a concert about a month ago and I have been flaring ever since. 'Muscle spasm after spasm and then a urgent need to use the washroom. Crazy - even sitting in my car is bad or sitting on hard chairs. Puts me in a flare. Hope you get better soon. Thanks for sharing!

    You should do dolphin plank, so that you are not doing plank on your hands, go on your forearms instead. You can also do half dolphon plank where your knees are grounded.

    I did yoga either 3 times or 6 times a week before my cysto/hydro, and I found planks to be extremely difficult and painful for me, mainly because my abs were weak, and my wrists give out super easily.
    If you go to the PT, can they help you with other weaknesses and issues, or is strictly pelvic floor?

    Doing a regular plank is the position you are in when doing push-ups, before lowering yourself down. Can be done on your flat arms or on your hands.

    I did yoga either 3 times or 6 times a week before my cysto/hydro, and I found planks to be extremely difficult and painful for me, mainly because my abs were weak, and my wrists give out super easily.

    Being a fitness instructor and a yoga instructor, this has been my biggest challenge, has been accepting the fact that certain ab exercises can flare IC.

    I do notice that if you are in a flare avoding anytype of ab work is essential (unfortuantely). IF you are trying to strenghten your abs, then a great idea is to do ab work that does not involved a lot of crunching. FOR example, PLANK. (upward plank and regular plank)

    Hang in there, I know how challenging it can be when your fitness routine is "jammed" with IC pain. Maybe add some YOGA to your routine, Yoga can also bring you the ability to strenghten your abs through yoga postures and also provide the benefits of healing your ic through deep relaxation breathing.

    I have been doing push ups for a while with no problems...but yea...I think it must be from working the abs....I am not going to do any ab work any more. Also...I have to be honest..I am a little nervous to go for the Pelvic Floor PT b/c I heard of ppl getting worse after it I do have a script for it...to go..I just havent gone yet.

    You may need to go to a physical therapy session to get your abs back to normal. You shouldn't be doing any exercises that tighten your abdominal muscles or cause you to push.

    I recently hurt a hip, my Dr. said that it actually was caused by my lower back. He said he felt I was walking differently because of my back being sore.

    He recommended that I strengthen my abs by doing setups, I said no that will make my bladder flare.

    He then suggested I do Military type push ups, this hold Ab's tight, but not the bending pushing etc. I said I would try it, and see how it goes.

    He said start very slow, do 3-5 push ups X's per day to start with if I can less if need to depends on shape you are in when you start. Then try to increase one push up per week. Once I reach a good number of times for me, I can add one more x per day. If I add another x then drop the number of reps back down and start again.

    He gave me advice like this about my knees a few years ago, and his exercises took all the pain out of my knees, so I am willing to believe him this will help.

    I have only been doing this since last Friday, so I can't tell you if it is working yet or not, but I have not started to flare either, so I am going to keep going.

    I meant to add Donna could very well be right, it could be a strained muscle and it takes time to heel before you try something else.

    Muscle strain can take days or weeks to heal --- if you don't feel better within the next few days, I think it would be a good idea to check in with your doctor to be sure you don't have anything else going on.

    Absolutly! I stll have a problem with this. It stinks! I have been doing my AB work out in very small doses, this seems to help a bit. Just don't over due it.

    I have very very very weak ab's....I usually go to the gym everyother day. About 5 days ago I decided to work abs....and oddly enough a day or so later my IC is hurting and flaring so bad?? I do not think it is diet related at all.

    SO i a was just wondering IF that could cause a flare??
