  • Scared about antibiotics - don't know what to take!

    Hi all

Thank you so much for all you answers about the pain medication and caffeine. I tried them and it doesn't seem to bother my bladder.

I do have a issue that is causing me a lot of anxiety: Antibiotics....

For the past three months I have dental pain in one of my teeth and after a root canal and various other treatments, my dentist gave me Augmentin to try. Strangely, I had it in the past and it caused no problems, but this time it caused such a horrid flare, I had to stop at day 3.

Now I'm very worried as my options are running out. I can't take Cipro like antibiotics as it causes a type of dermatitis....same goes for Flagyl and Klacid. Now it seems the Augmentin is also to be added to the list.

The 'safe' AB I took in the past was Zinnat and Bactrim.

I so scared I need and operation or something and then I must go on AB. Especially now with my dental problem that they just can't seem to fix. (I will most likely have to go to a dental surgeon to get it fixed). I'm so scared about the whole concept of AB that it freaks me out completely and might negatively impact treatment one day. Oh yes, anti-inflammatories are also out...they flare me big time.

Needless to say, my doctors are scratching their heads....

There are other antibiotics available. I'm allergic to both penicillin and sulfa and there is never a problem finding one for me. Your doctor should be able to offer you some assurance and advice.

    Warm hugs,

Im allergic to pennicilin and doxycycline makes me so sick I cant tolerate them. Ive had several cases of Lyme disease over the years and am usually put on Ceftin for that. It doesnt seem to cause a problem with the IC. I drink plenty of water when I take a dose. I too had problems with Motrin but can tolerate Aleve all right.
Diagnosed with IC in 1997. Currently taking Elmiron, Hydroxizine, Aleve, Ditropan, Glucosamine, Chondroiten, MSM Quercitin, Vitamin D, Probiotics, Co-Q 10. Also working on bladder retraining

I've been ok with Pen VK, Keflex, and Rocephin. No flare from any of these. I was also ok with Augmentin. I do get a flare from Macrobid, so I only take that one if I have something resistant to the other antibiotics. One thing that I find helpful when getting any new prescription filled is to have the pharmacist find me the one with the least dyes & fillers. Sometimes it takes a special order or a little more time, but it's better than flaring.

I have lots of allergies and react to lots of meds, but my Dr. always seems to find something I can take.

What I recently figured out is: I was on an Ab for a tooth infection and it burnt my throat, I still had to take the ab's as I could not have the root canal till the infection was better under control. So when I finished the ab's and the pain came back right away I need to take more ab's. the dentist wanted me to take the same kind, Calyndamyicin (sp) so I asked if I could take 2- 150 mg instead of 1- 300 mg pill, the dentist agreed. I asked this because the pills would be smaller.

Well the new pills were smaller a lot smaller and made by a different manufacture and I had no problems at all with them.

So sometimes it may not be the actual med it can be the fillers etc that are used.

I can take McNeil brand Tylenol, but no generic Tylenol's they give me really bad headaches.

I know we are all different but I would not right off a med, I would try a did brand and see if I got the same reaction as long as the reaction is non life threatening or too severe.

          Good luck MG

Re: Scared about antibiotics - don't know what to take!

I have had a flare from hell the last two months. My uro told me not to take antibiotics unless I had nitrates in my urine. I had leucocytes but no nitrates so waited before taking antibiotics ... Finally a trace of nitrates so take macrobid but didn't seem to help - went to have a urine test - no nitrates and very few leucocytes - quit taking macro. Sent sample in for a culture and shows infection and macro was not working. I am now taking augmentin - feel crappy all of the time - anyone else have test that showed negative and you still had an infection? I hate my bladder it controls my life.
