  • Advice Please - Muscle Flare or Irritation Flare

Alright - I felt like I was doing very well for about five months - I had a cystoscopy done six months ago with hydrodistension?? It really helped... I was able to cut down going to the washroom by a lot. At my worse I was going 45 times a day - after my second cysto - 15 times a day... now in the last month it is going not that well - 25 times a day or more depending... pain though is probably worse than going to the washroom - although peeing is painful. That's why I want to know what you think I should do.

Two weeks ago I had enough and went for an instillation - which helped me to make my five hour drive to a seminar the next day and helped to decrease the burning pain going from my bellybutton down (not even pyridium was helping) - although my muscles were spasming the whole drive and it was like a string was pulling from my belly button down to my bladder. I got half way- stopped at a pharmacy and was almost crying asking the pharmacists to find a pharmacy that could fill my prescription for b & o suppositories. The pharmacists found only one place in all of the city I was going to that had enough to fill my prescription. I was thankful for that.

I am very careful of what I eat and I know the foods that are triggers to me -(all tea, vinegar, too much carbohydrates, whole wheat bread, tomatoes, perservatives) so I do not think it was from what I ate - however, part of my pain could have been from water. So I'm not convinced it is from irritation - thus not sure if I should go the instill way or not - maintenance instills for four weeks??? I am think the flare that started four weeks ago started firstly by a very long work week, then by taking amoxyillin which I later stopped... but it is continuing. Some days are bettern than others thankfully...

Or what can I do for muscle flare? I went to my family doctor on Thursday and asked to try a prescription of atarax and a prescription of oxytrol. The oxytrol has to be ordered in. I am going to start with the oxytrol first to see what happens and then after I see what that does - I'm going to try the atarax. Any suggestions for this type of flare??? or what you think the type of flare I am having is...

Sometimes when I stand up after driving for a long time it feels like everything drops - then my belly button hurts because it feels like a string is tugging on my belly button trying to pull everything out... it makes me stop - I take a few breaths and keep walking at a very slow pace.

Anyway, if you could help me in anyway... I would appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Rebecca

    Current Meds:
    1 Elmiron 100mg 3x a day
    1 Cimetidine 300mg 2x a day
    4 Gabapentin 300mg 3x a day (3600mg)
    1 - 2 Atarax 25mg at bedtime
    1 baclofen 10mg 3x a day as needed
200mg of Pyridium 3x a day (usually do in cycles - on for a week or two as needed) - I am very careful about this.
2 belladonna and opium suppositories as needed for pain daily.
Bladder instillations (Lidocaine, Heparin, & Sodium Bicarbonate)

I have tried but failed -
lidocaine instillations, heparin instillations, oxybutynin by mouth also called ditropan, tylenol 3s with coedine, cyclobenzaphrine, Ativan, vesicare, Oxytrol patches worked for 3 to 4 years and then failed, I tried Uracyst and had some success but my urologist felt that it was not successful so we moved on to trying something else. .

If the problem is spasms, there are several smooth muscle antispasmodics available. The one I take is hyoscyamine.

I don't really have answer to your question, but I find it interesting that you think carbs may bother you.

Over the last few months have started to suspect carbs make me flare. I do best eating the least amount of carbs.

I have been trying every couple of weeks different carbs to see if it is a certain type or all.

I have figured out for sure that I can't do popcorn, I have tried it 2x's in the last month and flared right away, the first time I air popped it and put a small amount of butter on it, I flared within an hour. The second time I popped it in coconut oil and added a bit of butter and the same thing happened.

I read that corn is not a simple carb, but once you pop it it becomes a simple carb so enters your blood stream faster, but adding oil slows this process down.

As you can see I have a lot more trial and error to do, to see if there is any validity too this.

I have switched to mostly organic carbs, I seem to be able to eat the carbs in veggies, but I can only have in small amount, I can eat a small amount of Natures Fare organic flax cereal, but maybe 1/4 of a cup, other ready made cereals I can't do. I have always felt it was preservatives in them, now I wonder.

I can eat the carbs on almonds, cashews, and coconut, but then I don't eat any of these in a very lg amount at any one time and they are naturally lower in carbs.

I have a friend who doesn't have IC, but is finding the same thing, so I wonder if they bother my stomach or intestines and then bother my bladder because my intestines are upset.

Just a process I am working on.

If you don't mind let me know what you think about the carbs and you.

Perhaps a compination of spasms relaxers and a six week course of instills will do the trick.

Thanks for your help thus far. I will start with oxytrol and see what that does - then if within a week I'm still feeling very uncomfortable and pain, I will do a course of instills. I think this would be helpful.

As for carbohydrates - I really do find carbohydrates bad - if I have white bread for breakfast, and then sandwich for lunch, a meat and rice for supper - although it is all bland - it really does do a job on me.

I find popcorn bad too - I am not sure how to go with carbohydrates - so I am just really careful. Right now I am working on a new recipe plan that will help me have something nice to eat and not hate my bladder. It's a really hard process. So as I work through my carbs thought - I will let you know more in the process.

          Thanks for your help!
