  • Never experienced this type of flare! Feedback?

I've had IC for 7 yrs. I have only had 1-2 minor flares (food related) lasted less for a day. Symptoms would be bladder pain only. I have a MAJOR flare that started 3 weeks ago from a nebulizer-related antibiotic ( left a gummy substance around my nose - can only imagine what went through the bladder! ). Yes, my bladder had pain, which has gone away. but the CONFUSING part is I am left w/ pelvic muscle pain. Feels as if I pulled every muscle in that area. It only hurts when I WALK. My uro checked me & I DO NOT have pelvic muscle Dysfunction. I am thankful the bladder pain went away, but this muscle discomfort is so strange. I have NEVER had this feeling in 7 years of IC. No frequency, bladder pain gone from flare, just left with this muscle "inconvenience". Has anyone ever experienced this? I haven't... yet I know its related to the flare. Thanks if you have any replies --I am confused!! Liz

My suggestion has to be to see your doctor. You may have something else going on and you really need to follow up on it.

Thank you, Donna. I already saw him. Said I am flaring. Just curious if anyone had "muscle" discomfort like this during a flare.

I have had a constant pain (dull ache) in my lower left side only when I walk for a few months now. It is very low on my pelvis and I thought it was from my IBS. I don't know though. Is your localized to one side or your whole bladder area? Mine comes and goes..

Thank you Pam. Mine seems to be the whole pelvic area. As I said, I've never experienced anything like this in the 7 yrs. I have had IC. It came with the flare, but hasn't lasted the whole time. Comes and goes for a day or two.

I used to have a similar feeling after a particularly bad flair. I always assumed it was from the bladder spasms that left the whole area really sore including the surrounding muscles. Yeah- I had some pretty bad spasms including pelvic floor stuff so it was no wonder everything in the whole area hurt.

Did the spasms subside slowly? or did you have to go to therapy? thanks, Liz

I was in pt for two months. She treated me for pelvic floor spasms and also bladder pain. I noticed though that if my bladder was very irritated I would get the spasm type pain during a flare. When the flare subsided so did the muscle soreness. Since I have been doing really well lately I don't have the muscle type soreness anymore since my bladder has calmed down and my pelvic floor seems to be functioning a lot better. I could feel muscle tension in my whole body when the bladder pain was bad- even my TMJ would act up from clenching my teeth so much.

When I first got IC, I was checked for pelvic floor dysfunction and was told I didn't have it. Several years later, I was in physical therapy for it. I think it can develop over time with IC or from an especially bad flare or infection that causes the muscles to become rigid.
