  • ultram helps IC?

Have posted on here and have been flaring very badly (or rather symptoms worsened) since August to change from moderate frequency to constant pressure and urge and pain and very diet sensitive. (For 3 months, no diet or anything would help)
Was waiting to be rediagnosed and in the meantime, doc gave me ultram (tramadol) Now tried it 2/3 days and it helped loads - cut down pressure and urge and a little frequency too (not capacity though) and of course pain

Had to stop it after a few days as everytime I took it, when the dose wore off had the worst migraines. (well seems like a verryy bad headache but imitrex gets rid of it)

So starting codeine and elavil instead and that was helping the pain and a little urge and pressure but am and was still flaring a good portion of the day and needed heat pad etc and still not able to do normal activities.

Well things got really bad since I ran out of Elmiron and my new doctor though it wasn't working enough. Now got lower capacity than before - 50cc and awful frequency from 10-15 to 30+.

So was reallly bad and needed sleep so took tramadol again and thankfully relief. I took 1 dose at 12am and was fine all day and night(needed heat pad still had urgemcy at night) and then was fine during the day too. Then back to flare again. Tried it another day, worked again for 12 hours.

How?? It's the normal release and with codeine I normally need to take 30mg 2/3x a day at least.
And how does it help? The only thing I can think of, is that once the pain is controlled with painkillers (ie strong enough), then the pain stays away longer as long as i'm careful?

the only problem is I swap one problem for another ie migraines.
If I could take tramadol I would take it untill the Elmiron/elavil or any other meds help more.

I went to the GP to ask if anything else could help ie codeine doesn't cause me headaches but she just dismissed it like I was mad!
Surely I thought if pain relief helps me , then maybe elavil would help more? Until I get Elmiron again, have been told to up it 20mg for a while then up again etc.

Just posted to ask, does this happen with others?
Should I tell my uro? See him in a month or so, but hoping if this helps, maybe there is something else out there that would work in the same way whether pain relief or not.

Can't believe that only codeine/ tylenol or tramadol can be used for pain relief for us. My GP spent 2 mins with me after telling her how bad I was, the lack of sleep and half hourly frequency day and night and pain and being off work for 6 months. Yet when we find something that helps, it is like she was saying ' and what do you want me to do?'

Luckily one of the docs at the GPs is very nice and may go see here next time

Ultram has been my pain med of choice since diagnosed in 2000. I've tried other pain meds but Ultram seems to help the most. I've heard before that it targets specifically pelvic area and lower back. One positive thing, too, is it is not as habit forming as many other pain meds.

I'm glad that your finding some relief with the Ultram.

Ultram made me have terrible migraines too, and it also caused me to throw up just about every time I took it. I don't recall it helping with the pain. I will tell you though, with just about every treatment I've tried for the IC and other body pains I've had to weigh the good with the bad. Like when I first started narcotics years ago I had bad itching problems, but my pain was getting better...so I dealt with the itching. I finally seem to have my magic combo of meds and I'm doing better with my pain medications. It stinks that we have to put up with side effects of one drug so that we are able to take the meds that actually help our pain. I wish I could help you more.

04/17/09 Crohn's disease almost killed me with a combo of extreme constipation from pain medications. My bowel ruptured, I almost died from peritonitis and spent several days in the ICU then more in a private room on the floor. If you have any questions about severe constipation from pain meds please don't hesitate to send me a message.

        thanks SandyRN
good to know it is just ultram that is causing the migraines. I hope I can find something that helps that doesn't give me migraines or other bothersome side effects. Yes, I get the sickness too but it's the migraines that are awful although at least I can sleep with those as bladder is calmer on ultram!
