  • Am seeing the new pain clinic tomorrow....

I have an appointment to see the new clinic tomorrow and I am a little nervous about it. I started into a flare this weekend and I am taking 3 vicoden at a time and it isn't touching it all. I am really hoping that they will help me find a combination of medications that will help me with the pain.
I am in the worst way right now and I am just so depressed with all the pain and the missing work and all, my husband is really trying to be helpful.
Is there anything that anyone can suggest that I should talk to the this pain guy about so that I don't sound like a drug seeker?
Thank you for all your help

    Kirsten,

I hope that things go well for you at the pain clinic and that you get the help you need. Unfortunately, there really arent any magic words to tell you to keep Drs. from confusing patients truly in pain with those who are solely drug seeking. If there were, the true drug seekers would know them too. It saddens me that we have to be so paranoid, but I know that this is a legitimate worry that most of us have had at some point. However, at this point, you have the d/x of IC, you also have a referral from another Dr. who agrees that it is a painful condition requiring pain mgmt (or your Dr wouldnt have referred you to a pain clinic and you wouldnt have an appt). So, the hard part truly is behind you!

I hope that your appt goes well and your new Dr. is able to find a combination that will help you lead a more active and comfortable life.

    Hugs,
    Amy

*Also diagnosed with PFD, fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain, IBS, migraines, allergies/asthma, dermatographism
*Kept trying a million different treatments for all these things until I found what works, and I am doing okay these days with the help of a cocktail of medications and the InterStim, which was first placed in 2007. [I have had 2 revisions - one in 2010 when my battery died and had to be replaced, and one complete replacement (lead and generator) in 2012 after a fall on my stairs caused my lead to move.]
*Current meds include Atarax (50mg at night), Lyrica (150mg twice a day), Xanax (0.5mg at night and as needed), Zanaflex (4mg at night), hydrocodone (10/325, every 6 hours as needed), Advair, Nasonex, Singulair (10mg at night), oral contraceptives, home instills containing Elmiron and Marcaine (as often as I need to do them).

When I went to my pain management doctor I took him a copy of my medical records and also a picture from my hydrodistention procedure......anyone who looks at that knows why I need pain medication

I think it really did help because I do think the doctors get people in there who really don't need the medication and abuse it. Of course, they make it hard for us who really do need it to be able to function at all.

And be honest with your doctor about the amount of pain you are experiencing. I know that sometimes I try to play the tough one and mask how much pain I really am in (I think it is a denial issue with me) and in the long run I do myself more damage than good.

You may also want to take a copy of the pain information found here on the network.

Good luck and I hope you get some relief from you pain.

Not too sure that the appt was worth it........

I went to my appointment this afternoon and I drove 2 hours to get there waited in the waiting room for 45 minutes than in the room waiting for the dr for another 35 minutes to be told that there really wasn't much he could do because he does more of the needle fixes and this isn't smething that a need can fix. So he did suggest that I go to my PCP and tell them that I would like a long acting opiate such as oxycontin, morphine, or methadone. Then the other thing I should try is the fentanyl patch.
I was rally hoping that I would be able to get some help down there today but again i sent back to my pcp, so I have an appointment on the 28th and that should give the dr I saw today enough time to mail my pcp a letter with his suggestions.
Does anyone else take this drugs and how do they work for you?

omg they did not.. that makes me so mad. Don't these people realize how difficult our lives are, and the "long" trips we make just for some sort of relief. What was the point of being told you need to see a pain doctor if he is just going to send you back to the pcp
sending you hugs... I am so sorry you had to even deal with any of this..

I am so sorry that he didn't help you today. I have to drive 4 hours round trip to my Pain dr, so I know how much that takes out of you. There is a pain clinic in my town, but like yours, they only do nerve blocks. That's why I have to drive so far. It is infuriating that they can do this!!!

So, did this Dr. say he was sending your PCP a letter with his recommendations? If so, at least he is doing that. Most Drs that turn down patients for whatever reason decline to make recommendations. So, if he is willing to do that for you, then at least you got something out of the visit that may help you to get the meds you need.

I hope and pray that you get the help you need soon. It is heartbreaking that you are still suffering after seeing someone today with the power to help you. This makes me so angry!

              You are in my prayers.

              Hugs,
              Amy

That is awful to be treated like that. Did the doctor at least give you anything to help until you can see your PCP?

I've had a "pain management" doctor tell me that I HAD to get a nerve block in my spine because he would NEVER rx pain pills to me or to anyone else. You're not the first to be told something like that. I refused the injection because I was scared out of my mind over it, and I felt like he was bullying me into this procedure.

It took several more useless appointments and word of mouth from a kind anesthesiologist to get me to my pain doctor that I have now.

I have taken all 3 meds you mentioned and currently I am on MSContin 60mg 3x a day. It's been helping a lot. I think the key is taking it 3 x a day. I took oxycontin 80mg 2x a day and didn't get as much relief as I do now, but I'd also grown a tolerance to the med after years of taking it. The fentanyl patches used to be a huge problem, they'd fall off in the shower, not work correctly, but they are much better now than they used to be and certainly do warrant you trying them if they're offered.

One thing, I also use B&O suppositories, and they're inserted rectally (gross, yes, but they work!) and they are GODSENDS to me. They help so much with pelvic pain and are about the only way I can have sex without worrying about the pain. I don't use them every day but they sure are great and something worth asking for. Since they're taken rectally I would think that doctor's wouldn't have as much problem RX'ing them as the abuse potential is decreased.

Good luck with your next dr's appt and I'm sorry you wasted all that time and energy on this one.

04/17/09 Crohn's disease almost killed me with a combo of extreme constipation from pain medications. My bowel ruptured, I almost died from peritonitis and spent several days in the ICU then more in a private room on the floor. If you have any questions about severe constipation from pain meds please don't hesitate to send me a message.

                    Discouraged!!!!!!!!!

The pain doctor didnt give me anything to get me through to when I see my Dr. I have vicoden so he said I should be fine. He did say that he would write a letter to my pcp so that will be helpful. I am in alot of pain right now and I have missed work all week.
Sandy are you taking all the meds together, or is this something that I will take one at a time, he thinks that I will be a great candidate for a two month trial will one of the three different meds, mscontin, kadain, methadone. Then he said that I should take the kadian, and follow it with the fentanyl patch....
I was just wondering if you take it one at a time.
Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts I really appreciate it.
