Well, if I am having a flare during the day, there is really nothing I can do except keep on going, because I have to go to work and classes. However, when I am hope I tried to go to sleep, although I usually have problems getting comfy, so I watch a movie or a TV show on my laptop so I can stretch out. Also my cat usually hangs out with me, so petting or brushing him can help. Also having a friend come over and listen to them about their day can help too!

    During a flare, it depends, if its during the day, that is pretty easy, as usually I'm at work, so hopefully I can concentrate on my work duties, between pain medications and heating pad (I can sit at my desk and work at the computer);
at night, I read or watch tv; cuddle with the "girls (dogs) and if its late enough take my nighttime medications and go to sleep. If I happen to wake up early in the morning (like 1 or 2 a.m. and can't go back to sleep- I take my book or crossword puzzle and do that for an hour or so till I fall back asleep - with the timer on the tv.

I pretty much do what Carolyn does at night -- I take all my "night medicine" as my husband calls it and then I watch TV while the cat sits on my lap to snuggle. Then, we get in bed and talk for a while, and then I read a little bit -- hubby falls asleep earlier than I do because even when I am at work (I'm home recovering from surgery right now) he has to go in earlier. Usually, the combination of reading a good book and my night meds puts me to sleep for a while at least -- often I wake up later with my face on the book and the light still on. LOL

At night, after I've taken all my bedtime medications (which, as a group, are pretty sedating), I stay up reading, watching a movie, playing on the computer, or talking on the phone (yes, my little sister stays up until 2 am talking to me some nights ). I stay up until I literally cannot keep my eyes open any longer, and that's when I get in bed for the night.

This works for me because I am so totally exhausted by then, I go right to sleep. No lying around waiting/hoping to fall asleep. And I usually get about a four hour stretch before I have to get up to pee, then another 4 hours and I get up. I'm fortunate that I can indulge in this system because I'm no longer working.

So that's what works for me. I don't know if it would help anyone else, but you did ask!

I'm up on the couch watching TV at 2 am, or on the computer, or reading somewhere quiet.

Distracting myself during the day is easy! It's at night I live the constant urge nightmare. There is absolutely nothing I can do at night to distract my constant urge of having to urinate while I am trying to wind down to fall asleep.

I am interested in what people do at night when we are suppose to be sleeping and can't because of the urges?

I play Brain Age on my son's DS Lite. Don't you love that little contraption? I love to read and watch movies, but my all time favorite distraction is my bath! Lock the door, light the candles, take my pain meds and soak my troubles away!

    I love Kadi's ideas too!

    Container gardening on my balcony
Crafts: making jewelry, nature print stationery, crocheting
    Library books
Curling up on the sofa with the cat
Write a note to a friend to tell them I am thinking of them (I don't allow myself to mention IC in the note)
Daydreaming about vacations I've taken in the past (try to remember all the little places I went on each trip)

started a topic How do you distract yourself?

    How do you distract yourself?

I was just thinking and realize that I have ways to help distract myself when my bladder is flaring. Of course I'm aware of it and, of course, there are times when nothing could distract me from it. BUt, I was wondering what you guys do for distraction from pain.

I go for watching T.V. or a movie, reading a good book, playing a game on my DS Lite (Sudoku and Uno Free Fall are my favs right now), napping or playing with my dog.
