  • B&O suppositories-need feedback for Dr

    Hey All

I need some feedback about B&O suppositories from people that use them. I have my regular checkup with my gyno next week and want to ask him to prescribe me some to try out. My gyno also supplies me with my pain meds to control IC. So far all my suggestions to him for certain meds I wanted to try for IC he has allowed me to try.

I have read from posts in the past from people that use the B&O specifically to help with sex. I can't remember where the posts are but I read one that said even though they take daily time released pain meds with breakthru meds, the B&Os worked best for pain with sex.

I need to tell my doctor some personal testimonals on why the B&O may work better then just my regular pain meds alone when it comes to sex. I got a feeling he will say its just antispasmatic/opiate pain reliever and if your regular pain meds won't help then the b&o will not. NOTHING has helped so far to make sex the least bit comfortable, I mean it's to the point I won't even try anymore b/c its too painful. I mean they make how many different prescription drugs for men for impotence...I just want a shot of being able to have sex at least once a month and if that means having to take a b&o to at least help a little then I deserve to have that chance. It's no different then a man having to take a prescription pill for impotence everytime they want to have sex.

If I could get any responses back from people that have used the B&Os and how they worked for them, good or bad!!!

    Thanks so much in advance!!!!!
    Amy

I have used the B&O, typically when I rocket into super spasms following self cath. They seem to help pretty well then. I try not to use them often at all though, it's like a worst case scenario thing for me. But, they do work and for me, have no side effects.

HI I haven't heard of B & O suppositories. But would love something that made sex less painful. Can you tell me more about B & O? Thanks! Roxie

The B & O letters stand for belladonna and opium. They are rectal suppositories that definitely help with bladder spasms. The only time I have ever used them was in the hospital after hydrodistention. We call them "magic bullets."

wow - my doc has given them to me because they do help sometimes, and the nice thing is I don't get any really bad "high" 'from them which surprized me since they are opium. i do have very severe IC so maybe that is why she gave them to me. unfortuanetely (well ... not really just for this case) I am a virgin so I have never had sex and have no idea what that all is like as far as pain. BUT - from what I have found out the B&O are amazing for spasms and that seems to be the problem with sex so it makes sence. You should give it a try. caution - they are VERY hard to get at phamacies (could be because i live on a little island) so give it time when you take them it - last time it took about 2 weeks for them to special order them for me.

It was probably my post you read about the b&o helping for pain during sex. My doc prescribed them just for that, even wrote it on the bottle, which was a little embarrasing!
I take a long acting med and a breakthrough med and the b&o, but not very often. They work differently for me b/c it goes right to the source and seems to relax my bladder and pelvis. The only problem is I need to use it about 30 mins before the act and you dont always know when it will happen. Plus, it does kinda kill the mood to say "Sorry hunny, I gotta go put my medicine up my bum" right during the before part! But hey, something is better than nothing, right?
I would ask your doc for them. Many docs are okay prescribing them, I hope yours is too.

I use B&O supp quite a bit. I can't say that it helps with sex (during), I normally use them afterwards since that is when my pain really starts. I try to keep my pain from my hubby as much as possible.

But I also have heard that people put them in 30 minutes or so before, but just to let you know from experience (not during embarrassing moments) but the supp melts, so it could "seep" out a little. Just a heads up!

I didn't see anyone post about the different doses...there are 2 kinds, 15A and 16A....the 15A has 30mg of opium in it, and the 16A has 60mg of opium. The opium breaks down into what is basically morphine, so even though the word "opium" sounds like you are going to hallucinate or something, you're not going to. What I've also found is that the pain relief is very localized in my pelvis, which is wonderful because thats where I need them to work. They're really great for pain with sex, bladder spasms, and general pelvic pain.

I read someone is allowed to use them 3x a day?! I know the label in the box says no more than 2x per day. I would check with your doctor to make sure thats ok. Thats an awful lot of atropine (belladonna) in one day.

I am the one that my doctor has prescribed 3 times a day. I have talked to him about it as well as my former doctor that did my interstim (Dr. Ragi Doggweiler and have also researched it on line. My pharmacist has also looked into it for me since he normally doesn't order so many at one time. What I have read and been told that they can be used up to 4 times a day. I normally use them once before bed and when I wake up in pain around 4:30, but sometimes do need it in the middle of the day since I don't have pain meds to take during the day. But, yes my mother who is a retired RN and I have asked about the dosage several times since I had some concerns on things I have read.

Thanks for the concern, it is appreciated.

I'm going to ask my doctor about the 3x a day thing. I don't use them every day, but I get tired of getting 2 boxes for a month's supply. That's only 24 suppositories, and they NEVER last all month. How many boxes will your insurance pay for?

I am also allowed to use them 4 times a day, which is what I understood to be the max in the information that comes with them.
Someone else on here wrote that their doctor gave them 240 a month, or 8 a day! I dont think that is safe to use them that many times a day.
Plus, when I use them more than 2-3 times a day, I get ummmm......side effects that aren't very pleasant.
I also use the 16A ones and found them much more helpful than the 15A ones.
Hey Sandy, I had a question for you. The amount of opium in the 16A ones says 60 mgs but then I read in the leaflet that only 10% of that breaks down in to morphine so I was wondering if you knew about how many mg's we are getting in each one. If that makes sense. Like when I am figuring out how many mgs of Oxycodone I take a day with my long acting and short acting. I am always curious about how much the b&o add to that b/c if you take 3-4 a day, that says it is 240 more mg a day and that sounds like a LOT! Sorry if this is confusing. LOL!

Oh BTW- my insurance will pay for up to 6 a day so that would be.....around 14 boxes, right?

My insurance pays for 90 a month. Since I get the generic, I only pay $5.00. The actual cost is almost $450.00, so I am so THANKFUL for insurance!!! They accidentally had the non-generic filled and it was going to be $75.00, but I told them to send them back.

The main reason that my doctor prescribed them is since it doesn't go through my system like oral meds and I am not needing to increase my pain meds to a longer acting one.

Sandy, I hope your doctor will let you take them more often. Even if you don't take 3 a day, you will at least have a stockpile. That is what I do in case I can't get the prescription on time. It has taken 2 weeks at times.

My doctor prescribed me the B&O suppositories today. He wrote the script as just B&O suppositories nothing about the mg dosage or 15A or 16A and the pharmacists gave me the 15A 30 mg dosage.

I wonder what made him decide on what dosage? The script the doctor wrote did not indicate in any way which one and he did not call my doctor to figure out which one. ??????
